Hi Eilleen :)

I can find Bede Houses - 12 of them - in the 1851 census.  They were almshouses http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/poorhouse.html

close to the George in High St (Stamford St Martin) http://tinyurl.com/ylf5uza
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hello Eilleen  :)

I presume you have already found William in the 1841 census but just in case there is a William Exton residing at St Leonard’s Street, St Georges, Stamford and listed as 60 years of age and a Male Servant.

Also living at the same address is Elizabeth Exton age shown as 55 and Edgar Reed age 20 and a Carrier.

Hello Geoff

I'm pretty sure those are the Almshouses in Station Road Stamford and backing onto the River Welland. I think they may also be referred to as Lord Burghleys’s Almshouses.

Hi Alan
Yes, I think you're right - in the aerial shot, they are just to the north of The George; you can see the trees in front.

Eilleen - of course, this is in Rutland not Lincs ;)

Alan thank you for the census iformation,
I have never been able to get my head round William and William, ?? i.e who is who.  ???

20/1/1847:                William Exton absconded workhouse.

3/3/1847:  William Exton regarding his apprehension and 7 year sentence for transportation

19/7/1848:          William Exton, St. George, inflamed leg, given relief.  (I think this means he wasn’t in the workhouse itself)

.
26th June 1848, William Exton, died in the Bede house, Stamford.

However, the older Wm died 26 June 1848 in Bedihouse, Saint Martin’s, Stamford so may entry three belongs to the younger Wm?
