Criminal register look-up please
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 16:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Would somebody please check Michael Campbell, who was imprisoned on 18 July 1872 in Cumberland?

I wondered if there were any more details on the full view.

Thanks
Rosemary

Hello Rosemary,

I couldn't find anything "local", but there is this from the Trewman's Exeter Flying Post, Wednesday July 24 1872.

"THE CARLISLE MURDER - At the Cumberland Assizes, on Saturday, Michael Campbell charged with the murder of James Patrick, at Carlisle, was convicted of Manslaughter.  The crime was committed on the 2nd of March, when the two men, who were both bad characters, were drinking together, and in a state of semi-intoxication.  The next morning Patrick was discovered with his skull fractured with a broken rail which lay by his side.  The rail had recently been tarred, and the prisoner's hands were found to have tar upon them.  The prisoner alleged that the blow was struck in self defence.  He was sentenced to seven years penal servitude."

Thank you both for that.  Looking at it though, I don't think it's the Michael I wanted because of the age he would have been.
My Michael was born abt 1857 (aged 14 on the 1871 census).  That would make him 15 at the court case for this murder.
Going by the description in the news article, he is described more of a man of bad character, not a boy of 15.  And my Michael was living in Cleator, Cumberland in 1871.

I can't find anything else about Michael after the 1871 census, not even a death.  That's why I got excited when I saw the criminal record.

Thanks anyway - an interesting story :o

There is a Michael Campbell 24 living in Cleator Cumberland - 39 Church St in the 1881 census.
Don't think it is yours as he was born in Ireland.

He is with his wife Agnes 26 ( also born Ireland) 4 children, 3 born Ireland, youngest Cleator. Also in the house is his mother Francis 50 and sister Francis 25.

Let me know if you want this.

I seen this one Jan, but Michael's mother on the 1871 census is Bridget Campbell.
He was born in Ireland, so could be him but the mother doesn't match.  Bridget died in 1878.
