Thanks for that. Seems from what you say it was a boarding school. How many pupils there in 1861?

1871  slighlty strange entry

RG10 1615 9 12
BArton House Boys School

Elizabeth 51 widow mother bn Tydd St MAry
James W 23 brother BA second master bn W
Ann M 19 sister  bn W
Jane 17 sister bn W
Susan 15 sister bn W
Decima 14 sister bn W
John 21 brother Coal merchant bn W
Harry 12 brother bn W

then numerous other school masters, servants and lots more pupils (but no Lills amongst any)

but I am not sure who is the head of the house - if you go back to the h/h before it is Barton House the farm, occupied by John and Fanny Desborough and their family.

This I think begs the question "Where was John, the 21 year old coal merchant in 1851 and 1861? There is also another anomaly, his inclusion in the children makes Decima the 11th child. The name means 10th child. A school master wouldn't make a mistake like that in the Victorian era!

Hmmmm

I make Decima the 10th! but I am taking West (age 3 in 1851) and James W (age 13 in 1861) as the same person.

And I do wonder if John (21 in 1871) Is the same as Thomas (1 in 1851, missing in 1861) but that would bring Decoma back to 9th ... but there could be a baby that is born and dies between censuses of course.

Will hunt around and see what else I can see.

Would be worth looking for a Will for WIlliam (once you have his death, which we know is between 1861 and 1871) and for Elizabeth (as Wm may just have left it all to her!) as I am sure they will have left them, and they could be a real help at sorting out the children and what happened to them all.

Now that I have entered that in the tree some mysteries are resolved and other re(ocur). Particulary Decima is now once again the 9th child. There seem to me to be two likely times when a non surviving sibling could have been born between the birth of Eliza in 1841 and Samuel in 1844, and between the birth of Samuel and that of his brother James West in 1848. I shall of course attempt to find whether William senior left a will as this might solve some more of the mysteries. Thanks again for your help.
