Sculley's Stafford
« on: Thursday 10 March 05 09:43 GMT (UK) »
Please could you help I have now Jess Scully's Birth certificate he was born to a Patrick and Mary Scully in 1864, at Middle Row,Gool road, Stafford. Please could someone look to see if his parents are on the 1861 census' and maybe someone could tell me where Gool road was or what it was like it sounds a bit grim thanks

Unfortunately I haven't got acess to the 1861 census but I'm betting its Gaol Road. It is still there in Stafford because the prison is on it

Is there a Goal Road as well as a Gaol Road? Gaol is the old spelling for jail

Hi June

Middle Row is still in Gaol Road, it's a small bunch shops now. (I think) there are some cottages directly opposite the prison entrance but they're called Goal Mews.  It's not so grim!  :o
I think the cottages were originally built for the prison officers.
Gaol Road is one of the main roads (although not busy) into Stafford Town Centre.
