WHEN & WHERE DID THEY MARRY
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 22:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Im looking for the marriage of James Holsworth b 1789 Salhouse & Sophia Ann ?.

Their oldest child was James Holsworth b 1811 so imagine they must have married about 1810.

What I would like to know is when they married, where and what is Sophia Anns maiden name.

James b 1789 died in 1839 and I cant find a death for Sophia Ann or a census so have no clues.

I know her name as Sophia Ann because Ive found her childrens baptisms on Freereg.

Any help or suggestions would be very welcome.

kind regards

There do not appear to be any relevant marriages in Norfolk during the period 1801 - 1815.

However, there is the following marriage in London:

2 September 1810
St Mary, Marylebone
James Holsworth
Sophia Ann Fenn

Essex - Burrell, Thorogood
Norfolk - Alcock, Bowen, Bowers, Breeze, Burton, Creamer, Hammond, Sparkes, Wakefield, Wiggett
North Devon - Burgess, Chalacombe, Collacott, Goss
Northamptonshire - George, Letts, Muscutt, Richardson
Somerset - Barber
Wiltshire - Brine, Burges, Carey, Gray, Lywood, Musselwhite, Perris, Read, Turner, Wilkins

Hi Nigel

that was quick, thanks for your reply I had noticed that but didnt mention it because would people go all that way to get married given that the family were all ag labs.

Any thoughts on that, was it a usual occurence given that James died in Salhouse and their children were also born there?

I would appreciate yours or anyones thoughts on that. I know Fenn is a name Ive come across in Norfolk before.

kind regards

Janice

The marriage appears correct in view of its date relative to the births and Holsworth and Sophia Ann not being very common names. Additionally, there don't appear to be any alternatives in Norfolk.

Marriages are usually in the Bride's parish. Was Sophia Ann born in Marylebone? Alternatively, was she born in Norfolk but by 1810 working, say, as a servant in London?

Hi again Nigel

all the questions you pose are questions I asked myself and just suppose she was working in London or born in London how did she meet James Holsworth?.
I did come across a Sophie on 1841 census who was described  as of Independent means was this her?.

A real dilemma , where did you look for the marriages? do you have access to all Norfolk marriages, are they all transcribed?.
I know what your thinking Ive got a right one here.

Sorry to be a nuisance.

Hi Janice,

It is likely that at some stage she was living near James. She may, for example, have been born in the same parish but later on have left for London to find work. I have a few ancestors who were born in Norfolk, married in London and then returned to Norfolk. Alternatively, perhaps she was born in London and her parents later moved or returned to Norfolk.

When researching Norfolk ancestors if I can't find an event in Norfolk the first places I then usually look are London and Yorkshire.

I have also sent you a PM.

Hi Madpants

thanks for that I did find it and her parents marriage in 1774 Elizabeth Peake all at the same church.

I Hate it when my relis end up in London as they are so difficult to sort out, so many churches I thought once Ancestry had put the London records on line it would be easy how wrong I was.

Thanks again

Janice
