William Todd travelled to Adelaide South Australia 1855 on "Punjab"
« on: Friday 06 November 09 03:07 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to establish if William Todd bC1835 who arrived Adelaide 1855 belongs to a Todd family who arrived Sydney on "Kate" 21 Nov 1854.I think it is his father also William, mother Ann and sister Mary Ann who came on the "Kate" as his age of 20,trade of carpenter (same as his father ?) matches except that William Jnr states that he came from Kent.

I believe I have found the family in 1851 at Islington, comprising:
William Todd    40 carpenter born Durham (his parents came from Byers Green)

Ann                  43                 born Chelmsford Essex
William             16                 born London
Mary Ann          12                born America
Charles Francis  5                 born London
Of course by 1861 they have left for Australia.William Jnr apparently travelled alone.

I am hoping to establish that I have found the correct William Jnr.
There is no connection to Kent I am aware of,so there is an element of doubt that I have the correct person.

Assistance geatly appreciated.

In what context and by whom is William junior stated to have come from Kent - am wondering if it could mean that he sailed from Kent ie. Gravesend as many did?

Thank you Casalguidi.
I need to find my copy of the "Punjab" passenger list which has William Todd Jnr from Kent.
The family of Todd I am researching originally came from Byers Green Durham, but the father must have spread his wings finding a wife born Chelmsford Essex. Two sons William Jnr and Charles Frederick appear to have been born London and a daughter Mary Ann in America,so the family must have moved around.
The family was together 1851 at 32 Islington St Islington.
My "theory only" was that William Jnr may have taken advantage of free travel to Adelaide, leaving the next year.He could have then joined his family in Sydney where they settled.
I was unaware Gravesend could have been his departure point.
I would like to consult a descendant in NSW who might have better information.

Happy New Year

Hi Rex :)

If he was baptised before he sailed, he could well be among the others, before they sailed.
Try medway city ark, look under St. Andrews Gravesend, that was the one most of them went to, being right on the Thames and pier.

Best wishes....Iris :)
