William DYER
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 17:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace William Dyer born about 1830 in Plymouth.  He first surfaces in Tredegar, South Wales when he marries Dinah Jones (nee Morris) on 2 December 1871.  His father, also William, was deceased by the time of the marriage but was a tailor.  I have been unable to find William anywhere prior to 1871 and would be grateful for any help.

Thank you for that - however I don't think its the same man as he was born in Plymouth not Hampshire.

Hi,

no you have the right William in 1881, however in 1891 and 1901 the census returns say he was born in Plymouth. I've plumped for two out of three being right. :D

Hi Claire,
are you still interested in this person?
William Dyer, born in Plymouth, Devon, and whose 2nd wife was Dinah Morris Jones, was my great, great, great grandfather. I was not able to find what he was doing from birth until the 1850s. But, in 1855 he was an iron puddler residing in Rhymney and married to Elizabeth Thomas. They soon moved to Tredegar and had 3 children: William (b 1855); John (b 1857); and Sarah (b 1860). In July 1867, Elizabeth died from hepatitis. William remarried to the widow, Dinah Jones, in 1871, as you said. In the late 1880s, his two sons emigrated to the USA. William died at the age of 85 in Tredegar, on 25 Oct 1914 from heart failure and stroke. His daughter, Sarah Dyer Phillips, was present at the time of his death.
