ww2 service records
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 11:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Does anyone know when ww2 service records will be made available to the public? I understand that at the moment only the closest next of kin can request them.

Thanks

Rebecca

Hi

Since many servicemen would still be alive I suspect it will be years before they become available to the general public. I think the cutoff discharge date at the moment is c1920.

If the service person has been awarded medals or MID there may be entries in Flight Global or in the London Gazette.  The National Archives also have some records though not personal ones ie F540 for Sqns or Stn (RAF) that may mention the person you are looking for.
