Reids in Newtonstewart
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 19:41 GMT (UK) »
Folks, looking for a bit of advice - have tracked my mum's family back to NI - her grandfather was born/registered in Newtonstewart.  Is that Tyrone?  I've seen it referred to as Omagh?  And are there still Reids there??   :)

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. Yes, Newtownstewart is a small town in County Tyrone. It is half way between Omagh and Strabane, about 11 miles fron each. There are many Reid families all over Northern Ireland but If you can give us some information about your Grandparents we will try and find some more for you.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Cheers!  My great-granda was Charles, who I now know was born in Newtonstewart on  15/04/1889.  His father was John (b 1866/67) and his mother was Sarah nee McNamee.  The only other things we know are that John was a farm labourer and his parents were Charles and Isabella Reid.  Charles Snr was also a farm labourer.

John married his second wife in Glasgow, then disappears from the record once his son marries - we can't even find a death cert for him - and we were always told they were from Belfast, but it would appear not!  My great-granda served in the RHA and was at the Somme, and in Mesopotamia and the Dardanelles.  Oh, and he used to go 'home' every year for the walking season.

And that is the sum of our knowledge about that side of our family - the Orange walk thing is causing a lot of amusement, as the other side of my mum's family is extremely RC!  :-))

Thanks very much for those - I'll see if any of the older members of the family have heard these names!  I think I've got my parents talked into visiting NI in the new year, so we'll drive down to Newtownstewart, and see if we can arrange to have a look at the church records at the Douglas Bridge Church as well.

If you don't find any headstones at the Presbyterian church also check local Parish (Church of Ireland) churchyard since many Presbyterians are buried in Parish churchyarads.

Folks

Due to illness haven't made it to the ancestral lands yet, but can add that the Charles Reid who married Isabella was a labourer from Drunmahoe, and his father Charles was a weaver.  Charles Jnr died in 1884, in Skinbuoy.

Isabella herself was from Skinbuoy, and her father John was a labourer.  I think she died in 1885.  Getting there, slowly!   ;D

Quick update folks - I finally found some stuff on John Reid - he served in the Tyrone Fusiliers, and travelled around quite a bit.  I did eventually find a death cert for him in Glasgow, and it confirmed that the Charles and Isabella some of you found for me are definitely his parents.  :D
