Goff's of Dorset
« on: Monday 09 November 09 13:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I hope someone out there can help, I'm interested in any information on any GOFF's within the county of Dorset.
I'm particularly interested in information on Charles Goff born 1872 and registered in Beaminster, I think he was born in Mapperton, any dates and who his parents were would be great.
I'm also interested in John Goff who died in 1876 registered in Dorchester. Again any dates etc would be great.

I'd be eternally grateful for any information on either Charles or John Goff likewise any Goff's would be of interest.

Many thanks in advance

1891 shows him in the Mulli/ens household - with this note from an Ancestry subscriber ...

Quote
Goff rather than Mullens
His surname was GOFF (spelt incorrectly by enumerator as Gough. He was Mary's son born before she was married

Hi Preserved Killick

Thanks for the prompt reply. Some of the answers fit with what I was hoping!!
The answers you've given me about John Goff from the1871 census fit, John dies in 1876 and Anna M Goff re-marries to a Levi Travers.
However I was hoping Charles Goff was the son of John and Anna M Goff, but from the answers you give Charles was the son of Mary Goff who married Henry Mullins in 1876. This could still work for me if I could find out who Charles father was......

My reasons for asking these questions are "A" Charles Goff was my great grandfather but I have no idea where he came from, I do know he married my great grandmother in 1919 and from his marriage certificate I know he was 48 years old which would give a birth in 1871/72 and his father was JOHN GOFF.
So I'm going through all the Charles Goff's I can and trying to eliminate them one by one. So if Charles from Mapperton had a father John it would at least give me a circumstantial possibility...

thanks again

I've a few GOFFs and GOUGHs in my tree. They seem to originate from Melcome Regis/Weymouth.

Check the details at http://www.johnmilsom.co.uk/

How do you know that John Goff was his father? If the only evidence is from the marriage certificate, that is often untrustworthy as he may have made up a name to save face. Was he a bachelor or widower when he married?
