Occupation help, please.
« on: Monday 09 November 09 21:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the occupation is, in the top line, please?

There appears to be a superscript "n" in the first word, changing "carpet..."
to "carpent...", but I can't make out the rest.

Thanks.

'Hat.

Could you let us have the census year, and name, to compare letters with more on the page?

I think it says 'carpenter of all works' i.e. a carpenter who was a jack-of-all-trades.

My second thought was Carpenter, Jennifer, but there seemed to be too many letters at the end.

At least the enumerator didn't write like me - If I'm in a hurry, I tend to leave letters off!

I agree there are too many letters for Carpenter. On the same page second from top there is a Carpenter for comparison.

There do seem a lot of letters for Carpenter but like you say Roger, the first bit does look like 'Carpet' with an omitted 'n' added in superscript making 'Carpenter' with an extra letter or squiggle at the end.

After a very quick look, I cannot find William in the 1861 census but in 1871 the same William with wife Elizabeth seems to be in Gt Yarmouth with occupation Furniture Broker, which supports it being 'Carpenter'

  ???  ???

Unless I am much mistaken the William that Roger is interested in was born in c. 1808.

The William in Great Yarmouth in the 1871 census was born in 1828.

Roger, do you have him in the 1841 or 1861 censuses?

Jennifer
