Hi

Having looked at a family tree on the internet it says

Winifred Alma Westcott born 2nd December 1884 Tower of London. Died 9th December 1963.
Married Charles Arthur Stokes born 11th May 1888. Died 15th October 1976.

Confirmed by the civil registration index

Birth June quarter 1888   STOKES  Charles Arthur registration district St. Saviour  volume 1d Page 61

Death December quarter 1976 STOKES Charles Arthur born 11th May 1888, death registered Penzance volume 21 Page 0332

The tree says his father was George and his mother Susan nee Shepperd 1855-1935.

This looks to be his baptism

St Michael And All Angels Southwark Baptised 17th July 1888 born 11th May
Charles Arthur Stokes parents George Eban and Susan, 28 ? Street, father's occupation ironmonger's assistant.

Wow, Valda I'm astounded by both your knowledge seeking and the mysteries that it has bought up, I knew my great grandfather up until I was 14 yrs old, and yes he did live just outside Penzance as did I, so it is the correct person. His son (my grandfather was Arthur Edward Stokes) so it does seem that there is another little mystery there. Maybe my gt grandfather liked the name Edward, mind you I don't think that I will mention this to my 20yr old son whom I called ------ Edward -------- (because I assumed that Edward was a family middle name)

Regards
Mark

Hi

Winifred's parents' marriage

Marriages Mar 1882
Knight  Elizabeth Alma     Windsor  2c 615
WESTCOTT  John     Windsor  2c 615

and Charles'

Marriages Dec 1876
Sheppard  Susan     St. Olave  1d 437
Stokes  George Evan     St. Olave  1d 437

The tree gives Winifred's parents as Edward John Westcott (seems to have prefered the name John but that maybe where the Edward came from) 1849-5th June 1921 and Elizabeth Alma Knight 1857-7th July 1927.

Their first child listed on the tree to John and Elizabeth is Louisa Westcott 1882-1884 so it looks as if Sidney was born before their marriage.

Births Sep 1880  WESTCOTT  Sydney Edward    Hampstead  1a 668

1881 census RG11 16 folio ?
13 Hyde Park Street Paddington, London
Alma Knight  24 Servant Unmarried Housemaid domestic Oakham, Rutland

1881 census RG11 79 folio 100
Chelsea Barracks Chelsea, London
John Westcott 32 Head Widower Colour Sergeant  Drewstanton, Devon
Sydney Westcott Under ? Son Westminster London

Possible death registration for Sidney's mother but you would have to get his birth certificate to be sure when searching for his mother and John's first marriage.

Deaths Dec 1880  Westcott  Mary Ann  32  Marylebone  1a 360

Woah Valda, This is getting surreal, you are turning up more information quicker than I can read it!!! It feels as though portions of my family history are falling into place like the proverbial jigsaw, how do you do it!!!

Regards

Mark :)

I know this posting was a long time ago (now Xmas 2011), BUT John Edward is also my great grandfather.  He was in the Grenadier Guards, and is buried in Perranzabuloe, Cornwall.   His Edmonton home no longer exists
Got a bit more info if you haven't alreadt finished researching this.

Hi, I'm still on the family tree, but another branch at the moment.
Any new information on John Edward would be gratefully received.

Kind Regards and seasons greetings
