17th Royal Scots Roseberry Battalion
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 08:15 GMT (UK) »
My great uncle fought (and died) with the Royal Scots during WW1. Is there a regimental history available somewhere that could possibly provide me with some information regarding his service?

A somewhat poignant day to reply.

17th Battalion (Rosebery)
Raised in Edinburgh February 1915 by Lord Rosebery and a local committee as a Bantam Battalion. To Glencorse April 1915. To Selkirk May 1915. To Masham June 1915 and 106th Brigade, 35th Division. Taken over by the War Office 3.7.15. To Chisledon August 1915. Landed at Havre 1.2.16. On 11.11.18 located west of Grammont, Belgium.

Since this is the Midlothian section I have presumed with your list of names that your great uncle was 25529 James Ramsay, son of Hugh Ramsay of Leith who died 3rd April 1918.    Buried at:

WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY
France
Pas de Calais

Wimereux was the headquarters of the Queen Mary's Army Auxilliary Corps during the First World War and in 1919 it became the General Headquarters of the British Army. From October 1914 onwards, Boulogne and Wimereux formed an important hospital centre and until June 1918, the medical units at Wimereux used the communal cemetery for burials, the south-eastern half having been set aside for Commonwealth graves, although a few burial were also made among the civilian graves.

If this is the correct person then his medal card is available on line at the National Archives web site.

Ainslie & Unė kthimi i papen

Thanks for the replies.

My great uncle was William Ramsay, he died in October 1918 and is buried in Belgium. The fact that he fought with the Royal Scots intrigued me in that he was born & raised Glasgow & I assumed he would have fought with the HLI. Maybe the Royal Scots need for re-inforcements was greater? Who knows.

Unė kthimi i papen,

can you tell me if William's war record / medical record is available at the National Archives? I am aware that there was a massive fire during the war years that destroyed many of the records.

Also, is there any way to verify if his medals have been issued?

Hi Davieboy,

If you ask someone on this board with access to Ancestry.co.uk, you will probably get all the info you need from there, his enlistment and death recors etc. I did a search on Ancestry it shows so much, but need membership to be able to see all records.

You're right Tom - medal card and service papers on there. Sad reading through some sections and the return of personal possessions to family  :'(

Sent you a PM Davieboy.
