Why did they choose South Africa? COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 10:39 GMT (UK) »
Good morning from a wet and windy Brittany!

I am busy making a book with the Ancestry site about my Great Grandmother who emigrated to South Africa in 1921 (I've had several threads about her and her family).

I wanted to put in some background information and I wondered whether there was any particular reason why she chose South Africa rather than for example, America.  Was there a government project at the time to encourage people to go there with financial help etc?  When I was a child, apparently the government of the day encouraged families to emigrate to Australia (which we would have done, but my parents had three children and only two were allowed!!)

My second cousin (her granddaughter) who lived in South Africa until a few years ago, cannot think of any reason except that South Africa is, maybe, nearer home than the other countries she might have considered.

Were they given help on arrival to find somewhere to live?  I know from her letters that her children and husband had trouble finding work in the early years.

Any ideas will be very welcome.

Many thanks

Tilly
