Hello John,
Not sure if you're still looking at this but I wanted to say thank you for your research here on the Mayes family. I used your hypothesis in my Ancestry family tree - that Mary Abbott Mayes and William Sheppard Cox are the parents of William Mayes b1827, Knotting, Bedfordshire, d25 Jun 1881, Virginia, South Australia. He is my 3x Great Grandfather through his son Levi Mayes. I've just had a DNA match pop up through Mary Mayes Abbott's brother John Nimrod Mayes so this is an encouraging sign that the hypothesis might be correct... unless that person is related to me in some other way. The amount of DNA (cM) is very small so it would follow that this ThruLine is correct.

Hello Carolyn & welcome to Rootschat

No I am no longer looking at this Mayes family; I've just gone to look at my tree to see how I link my Partridges with these Mayes & why I was concerned about them. Seems a Harriett Mayes 1854 married into the Gell/Fairey family, then they had a daughter Ada who married one of my Partridge dynasty. Seems Harriett was daughter of Swithin Mayes & Selina, grand-daughter of John Nimrod Mayes 1787 & Sarah, this JNM being brother of William Mayes who married Jane Abbott.

Anyway I am glad my thinking & reasoning along with other Rootschatters back in 2009 may have been correct given that you've had a DNA match from the same family group.

Good luck in your research

Regards John

Interestingly William Mayes & wife Mary went off to Australia in 1851 with a James Sawford of Knotting, who is brother to Thomas who married Sarah Mayes Deighton.

Looking further found this Rootschat thread also from 2009 regarding a James Partridge from Bedford who went from Bedford to Australia on the Ship Catherine in 1851 together with William & Mary & Levi Mayes plus James Sawford & others --- who were in the Bedford Workhouse just prior to departure.

Hi John,
Thank you for the information. I’ve got the Sawfords in my tree too, just as wider family members of my Mayes- Cox family. Even with the DNA match I’m not super confident of the accuracy of this tree. I’ve spent some time today extending the branches of the other family members with the hope of finding more ThruLines - it would be good to find some matches from William Cox. Thanks again.
