+ Knotting 8 Aug 1853
Joseph Cox - father William Cox - labourer to Mary Ann Mayes - father William Mayes - labourer

I think this Mary Ann MAYES is the daughter of William and Martha. This William was from Ravensden born c1795. He baptised children in Knotting 1823-42

David - yes I thinks that's so, On 1851 William Mayes & Martha plus Mary Ann age 15 are living next door to William Cox, wife Catherine & son Joseph age 19 born Newton  Northants.  This is Catherine Boothy of Ringstead by the way... On 1861 Joseph & Mary Ann are in Riseley with 1 year old Louisa.

I think the last info explains who Joseph Cox was.

On 5) what I was wondering was if William Cox Mayes was the son of a William Cox and a Mary Mayes with possibly Mary Mayes being a sister of William Mayes 1776ish. No evidence for this just a thought to perhaps explain why he might have been living with William on the 1841 census.
regards.

I think I see where you're coming from.

What if: Mary the mother was Mary Abbott Mayes and the father was a William Cox. Which in 1841 would make William aged 14 the grandson of William aged 65, which I think is preferable to him being the son of an unestablished sister of old William. But it would need reference to the parish register to see exactly what the entry says, as at the moment the parents were William Cox Mayes and his wife Mary.

The IGI is now working having been down for maintenance all morning. Rootschat is not too busy that it won't let me in. Better quit while I'm ahead.

Sorry but I had to go work today ........

........ but Mary Abbott Mayes married William Bird at Knotting on 9 Aug 1838. He was a 51 year old widower of Souldrop - father Rober Bird; & she was a 29 year old spinster of Knotting. Witnesses were Samual Robin & Susannah Sawford.

Are you saying that William Cox & Mary Mayes produced William Mayes illigitimately ? His baptism record says he was son of William Cox & Mary Mayes with no additional writing - I was assuming that 'Cox' was his second name. His occupation was labourer

On William's marriage certificate his father is William Cox, labourer - not William Cox Mayes. Witnesses were John James & Selina Lamb

Hi John

I think the speculation kicks in as the position is ambiguous, with the father being named as William Cox in the 1847 marriage to Mary Lamb, rather than William Cox Mayes. It needs clarifying via the PR

Have you noticed how fast the site is now, now that they've changed/upgraded the server? It will help cut down my caffeine intake now that I don't have time to make a cup of coffee while the page is loading

Is it another work (a four letter word) day today?

What more are you expecting to glean from the PR, I've seen both William's baptism & marriage entries. I will take another look next time I'm in the Archives.

The baptism was in Dec 1828 - it does not give date of birth, but I did note that on marriage entry in Oct 1847 that for age it says 'with consent of parents' meaning both had not reached 21, so if aged 20 has him born in 1827.

William Cox was born 1806 & married Catheriine Boothy at Dean in Aug 1827
Mary Abbott Mayes was born 1810 & married William Bird in 1838
If it was them their ages are compatable, he was 21 she was 17,

......but as you say pure speculation

Found Catherine Deighton in 1851 census living in Rushden, Northants recorded as Deacon, being mother in law to Thomas Lawford who is there with wife Sarah & children Sophia & William.

HO107/1743 Folio 279 Page 23

Catherine is widow, age 59 born 1792 Sharnbrook so she could have been Catherine Tunn who married Thomas Deighton, but I've not found a baptism for her. There were tons of Tunns in Sharnbrook including a William Tunn 1793 who married Elizabeth Clark, & they had daughter Lydia (1827 Souldrop) who most likely was the witness at Thomas & Sarah's marriage.

It's Sawford, not Lawford (although there seems to be no difference between the enumerator's Ls and Ss), which must be the marriage you quoted in your original post - to Sarah Mayes Deighton
