1851/ 1861 Stockport - Redfern
« on: Thursday 10 March 05 21:18 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please help clear this up.
I was lead to believe that my GGgrandmother was Amy Johnson nee Redfern (b 1851ish) daughter of Joseph Redfern and Aminah Redfern but I can't find her or her marriage to Thomas Johnson anywhere.

I found an 1871 census record for Joseph and Aminah and others living at 32 Chestergate as follows:-
Rupert Doughton 22  Westminster, Middlesex, England Brother-in-law  married
Amy Johnson 20  Westminster, Middlesex, England Sister-in-law  married
Amy Johnson 2 months  Stockport, Cheshire, England Niece
Aminah Redfern 39  Dartford, Kent, England Wife
Charlotte Redfern 12  Heaton Norris, Lancashire, England Daughter
Janet Redfern 8  Stockport, Cheshire, England Daughter
Joseph Redfern 36  Heaton Norris, Lancashire, England Head
Kate Redfern 11  Brixton, Surrey, England Daughter

I have sent for my g grandmothers birth certificate but wondered if anyone could help in the meantime.

Thanks
Gillj

Hi Gill
I can proberbly help with the early Cheshire census's for Joseph Redfern, but looking at the census in 1871 it dosn't seem likely that he is the parent your looking for, get back to us when you have the certificate.

The certificate arrived this morning and guess what - the mother's maiden name was Doughton not Redfern. This means that the 2 Amy Johnson's at Joseph Redfern's are the ones I am now following up on. Their address was 33 Chestergate - next door to the census address.
I've found the marriage of Thomas Johnson to Amy Doughton also in Q1 1871 (bit rushed I think) and as Thomas was born in Lancashire and Amy in London my quest goes further afield.

Know any Redferns who'd like some information about their family?

Thanks
Gillj
