You will have the same problem with IE7 so don't bother switching it back on.

Also get Zone Alarm basic firewall for better protection:

Downside, why will I have the same problem with IE7 ? I used it happily before with no problem - I was able to download images fine..?

Newbie, if you read my first entry where I quote information about protected mode, it states that it was introduced with Vista/IE7.  In the past you may have had Windows XP/IE7 and then it was not a problem, but then you upgraded to Vista and it became a problem.  What the information implies is that even if you downgrade back to IE7 then you will still have problems with protected mode.

thanks for the clarification -, but the laptop has always had Vista and IE7 and I have always been able to download images from Ancestry no problems at all?  It would seem that this "problem" has only occurred since I downloaded IE8, which I don't remember actually doing!
so maybe I should try IE7?

I just re- read your quote from your first post,

This mode  is  called  Protected Mode  and works  like  a  firewall  for websites. 
When activated, Protected Mode will only allow websites  to write  to your hard drive  if
they  have  been  specifically  listed  by  you  before  hand

so if I add Ancestry to the list then it should be ok?
could you explain how I do that?  (sorry to be a pain)

You have nothing to lose by trying it.

Tools >> Internet Options >> Security tab

Click on Trusted Sites and then the Add button.

You should do this when you have rootschat.com open and it will add it.

Downside just a thought but having installed Zone alarm can I now turn off Protected Mode that will solve the problem! (I think?)
