Please Help - James Dallin Le Cren
« on: Friday 13 November 09 17:59 GMT (UK) »
Known Info:
James Dallin Le Cren was born 27 May 1842 London, England UK.
After marrying Alice in August 1883 they travelled to Canada in either late 1883 or early 1884.
They had settled in Pine Creek, near Calgary, Alberta in 1884. I have a copy of their Prairie home dated October 1884.
In 1890 their daughter Dorothea was born and the birth was registered in Calgary.
By 31st March 1901 they were back in the UK for the census.

I am trying to find out:
  • 1. the date & ship & log entries - when they left for Canada
  • 2. the date & ship & log entries - when they returned to the UK
.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thankyou.

Do you want any info/pictures from Calgary?  That's where I live.

If anyone died here, I don't mind taking pictures at a cemetery.

I have no luck with finding border crossings, so I probably cannot help you there.  I have enough struggles of mine in that area.

Unfortunately, immigration year was taken from 1901 census on...
Here they are in 1891 in case you don't have it
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-119.02-e.php?person_id_nbr=4736749

and his land grant...Farming perhaps wasn't his cup of tea...a load of work with not a high yield. You have to enjoy the labour .... put up with many hardships... The "free" land sounded more appealing than it was...

Hi
I am so pleased that you managed to find out some info; the land grant and 1891 census are a real bonus.

When he returned to England, he continued farming - the land might have been more expensive, but perhaps the conditions were not so harsh in southern England.

If anyone has any ideas about how they travelled back to the UK...would it be more likely to travel to Vancouver on the west coast or travel across Canada to the East coast and Halifax...

Many thanks for all your help.

MOst of us only have access to information / immigration into the country...There were only a few available databases for your immigration period and the one is now unfortunately defunct...

Do you have the information on Arthur Jannard as LeCren in South Canterbury NZ?
There is a photograph available as well, and two others mentioned with initials
 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzlscant/waimateindex.htm
Something on Henry & Frederick, who were obviously related to the family, and who's initials are above

http://www.dnzb.govt.nz/dnzb/default.asp?Find_Quick.asp?PersonEssay=1L5
( B.T.W. someone was married as  Jaumard in 1902 Edmonton district,  which seems to be the most used spelling of the name )
Now see that was father's middle name as well...although there are 4 or five different variations on the IGI  ;D

and I imagine you've seen this online tree also using LeCren

It would have been far more likely to have traveled back to Europe from the east coast, unless they wanted to go around South America or Africa - both very long routes.  I would try Toronto, Halifax, Montreal, New York or Philadelphia.  They seem to have been the major entry/exit for travel to Europe.

hi
The info on the Le Cren's in New Zealand is brilliant. Some excellent photos too.

The advise on the most likely passage back to England will help to concentrate my efforts.

Many thanks for all your help - really appreciated.
