Duff, Nichol
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 19:47 GMT (UK) »
In 1843, William Duff, his wife Margaret Henderson and their eight children, left Bankfoot, Perthshire, for a new life in Canada.  They were accompanied by William's sister, Janet. and a children's governess, Catherine Nichol whose age was given as 25.  When we were in Scotland in 1989, we stopped at the Bankfoot Hotel and made queries re the Duffs.  The innkeeper said we should have been there two weeks earlier as an elderly man and his nephew from New Zealand were enquiring about the same family.  The elderly man said his great-grandmother was Catherine Nichol who emigrated to Canada with the family of William & Margaret Duff of Bankfoot, as a children's governess.  He said she fell in love with one of the sailors on board, returned to Scotland where they married and then emigrated to New Zealand.  I am trying to find any information on Catherine Nichol and the man she married.
