Bere Alston - Missing Streets?

Just wondering if any of you good Devon folk would be familiar with Bere Alston.

I've found a couple of places on the census returns, but don't have a clue as to where they may have been.

In particular; Frog St., and Porters (could be Potter's) Alley.

I'm fairly familiar with present day Bere Alston but would greatly appreciate any help from someone far more knowledgeable than myself.

Hi David, I have had a look at the 1911 census list page and they show Frog Street immediately prior to Station Road and Frog St included the post office, the parish hall and the reading room. I dont know if this helps at all. It may be worth looking at other census area discriptions if you get chance so you can see where it fitted into the enumerators round.

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at the earlier census enumeration descriptions and the best position for Frog St. I could calculate was at the Bedford St. end of Fore St., or there abouts. And the enumerators seemed to vary their round slightly every census.
Present day Fore St. appears to stop at the junction with Bedford St. and Station Road continues on immediately after the 'T' junction.
So Frog St. could have been, what is now the start of either Fore St. or Station Road. I believe the post office is now on Fore St., but as for the reading room and parish hall, I've no idea.
I've walked the village streets several times on visits from home in Yorkshire to try and get a feel for the place but these two streets seem to elude me. Of course I didn't think to ask anyone while I was there!

Anyway, thanks for your help, Ronnie. You've at least confirmed the general area for me.

Hi just a ps really -  googled Frog Street and came up with Frog Street Cottage Bere Alston which is a holiday let, which supplies a map and it appears as you suspected in Station Road.

Hi Again

Frog Street as said is Station Road. Even the history society don't know why. The post office was right at the bottom of the  Bedford St junction with what is now Staion Road. If you visit again it is the building which had the 'Station Road' sign on it.

There are many small lanes off of Fore Street all with names long gone.

Trevor Bond is the chairman of our history society. 01822 840447. He'd know & was brought up in the village. I attended meeting the year before last but being mum to two very young children find it hard to go

Why not give him a ring? Meetings are the last monday of the month at 7pm
