Where was TUMBLE, Llantwit Fardre?
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 22:24 GMT (UK) »
In the 1861 census, one of my ancestors was listed as living at Tumble, Llantwit Fardre, Glamorgan.

I can find Llantwit Fardre OK and on the Lantwit Fardre page on Genuki (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/LlantwitFardre/), 'Tumble' is listed under "Hamlets, Towns and Villages" - but I cannot find that Tumble on any current maps.

Can anyone tell me where Tumble was?

Thanks

Hello.
The Tumble is an area in Pontypridd, Mid Glamorgan, South Wales.
The new wetherspoons pub is called `The Tumble ` built where Pontypridd
post office once was. The street is called `The Broadway`
The area includes the Railway Station.
   Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply - this makes sense, as in the 1851 census, my ancestor was living in Trallwng which is pretty close to where you say Tumble was.

I am finding 19th century S Wales addresses confusing as the old parish names don't necessarily line up with the industrial towns that developed later. I had spotted the Tumble Inn on Google Maps but assumed it it wasn't relevant as it seemed to be in Pontypridd - but I guess that the parish of Llantwit Fardre must have extended as far as the River Taff.

Can I try one more question:

In the 1871 census, the address information for my ancestor is as follows:
Civil parish: Llantwit Fardre. Town: Pontypridd. Ecclesiastical District: Glyntaff. Road and house: "Near old Police Station, ???" - but I can't make sense of the final word. I now realise that this is almost certainly in modern Pontypridd and not in modern Llanwit Fardre. I will try and attach an image of this address item - can anyone recognise this final word and tell me where it was?

Many thanks

Re previous message - trying to attach the image didn't work with my browser.
The name looks something like like "Lramwax" - I know this can't be right as I don't think Welsh uses the letter X but the word ends with a circular flourish. Does the 'Old Police station' mean anything to anyone?

Thanks

Hi, Try putting into Goggle, East Glamorgan parishes 1891 census.
These include lists from  the Glyntaff area in Pontypridd.
A street called Police Row is included.

Hi,
Goggle `Policing Pontypridd in the 1850`
I think the word you are looking for is `Tramway`
There was a `Tramroadside Police Station` in Pontypridd

I have now put the address item on a external server - here it is:

However I am pretty certain that Heddwch is right and that the word is 'tramway'. I gather from the very interesting police item that you quoted that this would correspond to modern Sardis Road

Thank you very much Heddwch. This has shed a new light on my ancestry - the ancestor in question was my great great grandmother. Her husband was a coal miner and it looks as if he had to keep moving because of his job. I thought that she was having to move a lot too - but now it looks as if she managed spend most of her time in Pontypridd - near her relatives. it was only in the late 1870s that they both moved to Abersychan where they ended their days.

Thanks again

HI
It looks like Tram Road written as one Tram road  is now The Broadway  Treforest Pontypridd and went from pontypridd town centre at Tumble (that right out side tPontypridd railway station) all the way to University of Glamorgan which was the old mining school.
cheers cardiff ;)
