STURMAN-Kings Langley(Red Lion Pub, Waterside)
« on: Wednesday 18 November 09 12:38 GMT (UK) »
I am researching this family for a friend's tree (Xmas present!). George STURMAN was the landlord of the Red Lion pub on Waterside between c1855 and  1871 according to census returns and trade directories. Has anyone a) got a picture of the pub I could use in my presentation?
and b) any links to the family- I have George's parents as Thomas STURMAN and Sarah UNDERWOOD, m 1788 St Albans.

No picture I am afraid but this link gives some details of the pub and mentions that there is a picture in a local book. Perhaps a call to the local library may help. http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/answers/answers-2003/ans-0303-red-lion.htm

Thanks for your help - I had discovered the book, but would have to order a copy from another (out of area) library, and my library got ever so confused with the last request - even though it is easy to sort out!

Hi Maureen - Yes!!! I'd love a copy of the photo - I just got back from 3wks holiday so am just catching up with my messages etc, hence me not replying until now! My e-mail address is as follows-
(*)

Thankyou so much for your trouble in doing this - it will be a thrilling addition to the FH book! I hope it will cheer them up a bit because the husband looks like he will be hospitalised over Christmas - perhaps having the book to read will take their mind off things a little!
Many thanks again,
Linsey

Interested to stumble upon this post as a newbie to Rootschat, having just discovered that my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents (William and Ann Freeman) apparently ran the Red Lion pub in Waterside, Kings Langley, in the 1840s (census 1841). That year their daughter Sarah married James Crawley, and their son Wallace Crawley (my Gt Grandfather) is listed in the 1881 census as 'brother in law' staying (aged 17) with Joseph and Mary A Sturman and their family at Home Park Cottages, Kings Langley. Mary Ann Freeman Crawley (Wallace's older sister) married Joseph Sturman in Kings Langley in 1861. It would be good to know what connections others have found between Sturmans, Freemans and Crawleys - all apparently having some links with the Red Lion. My mother was a Crawley and Kings Langley my childhood home - with the Red Lion very much in business. Thanks

Hello Wrawbarian,

Welcome to RootsChat !!

As Sarah says "Old members do pop back up ...."

I'm an example of this, I've just come on today after not being on for a while, actually since April 2012.

All the best.
