Martin family of Lorient, France
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 08:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am searching for baptism and marriage for a Jan Martin.  On his son's marriage certificate, it gives his father as JAN MARTIN Born in SAVIGNIER IN ANJOU.  His son was also Jan Martin and was born prior to 1710.  Not sure if he ws born in Lorient or Anjou, as i have looked on the Lorient parish records from 1705 to 1710 but could not find him.  Its possible he was born prior to 1705 in Lorient, or born in Anjou.
I have tried to look in the Archives du Maine-et-Loire, but my pc will not load the registers for some reason.
All i have is a marriage of Jan Martin jnr, the son, to Marie Jacquette Priol on 13 September 1734 in Lorient with details of their children.
From what i have been able to gather, this family were classified as Labourers, and there seems to be some involvement in the "Compagnie des Indes", in the subsequent generation.

If there is anyone out there that could be of assistance, i would really appreciate it.

Kind regards
Jackie

Good morning Jackie,

I don't know if it's the case, but if you need any help with translation of documents you have found, I could help. I was just browsing and came across your post.

I've lived in France for 35 years and speak and read/write fluent French. Unfortunately I don't live anywhere near l'Anjou or Lorient for that matter, but I would be happy to help if you need it.

Best wishes,

Nick

In Lorient there is a museum relating to the Compagnie des Indes:
http://musee.lorient.fr/

As the Lorient parish records are online via http://scecp.cg56.fr/etat-civil/index.jsp (which I guess you know about already), I'd suggest checking through them for all the Martins married around the same time as Jan/Jean's marriage in 1734.

Incidentally at the 1734 marriage I read it as "Savinier" (Savennières?)
The Maine-et-Loire archives for me seem to not work on Firefox and only on IE, you might have to try different browsers.

Hi Jackie,

If you only have one browser on your computer it's probably IE.
I checked again and on this computer the Maine-et-Loire site works in Firefox, so probably it's just an issue with the version of the browser or something of the sort.

And now the other site won't work on this computer for me  ::)
