Glasgow
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 12:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have searched on freebmd for the death of my great uncle who died in Glasgow. The search asks for a county or area name. Glasgow isn't listed as a place in it's own right and I can't find out which county it comes under. Can anyone enlighten me?
Many thanks, Kate

Hi, it's Lanarkshire.

Much of Glasgow fell under Lanarkshire although depending upon the time period you may find sections listed under Barony.

On the south side some of modern Glasgow (cathcart etc) will be found under Renfrewshire

It won't be listed on FreeBMD since that only covers Englands and Wales.

For Scotland, you need to visit ScotlandsPeople:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Free to search once you have registered, but pay per view for the records up to certain dates.

Have a look at the Scotland board for tips on using the site if you have not done so before.

Will check the Scottish records in a min but just going off track for a minute:Although we live in Gloucestershire my husband was recently working in Pollokshaws demolishing a block of flats. Is that anywhere near Springburn where my uncle lived? Many thanks again, Kate

Pollokshaws and Springburrn are on opposite sides of the city

The Shaws are on the southside while Springburn is in the North

Before trying Scotlands People have a look at
http://www.sctbdm.com/index.php

A Births Marriages Death's information board for Scotland

Volunteers list information which is not relevant to their own research but which has come into their possession.

PS On Scotlands people you can simplify your search by selecting "Glasgow City" in the areas of lanarkshire listed

Dave

Is this promotion between SP and Ancestral Scotland still live? There's been a number of complaints of late that no promotional code was being received from Ancestral Scotland. Not sure, because no one posted back, as to whether the problem was resolved.
