Advice Please.
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 12:21 GMT (UK) »
I will be very grateful if some one could help me!

I have just received the marriage certificate for my grand parents. My problem lies on my nans side. The certificate says" Lizzie Moran otherwise Murphy "and also states that she is a widow. Lizzie was only 26 when she married my grandad, I have tried family search and national archives but I am unable to find any information on the marriage to the said Moran. Can anyone advise me what to do next?

Also if anyone requires any "look ups" for ancestors that have emigrated to the UK I am willing to help

The date of the second marriage is 28/11/1912. residing in Cornmarket in Ballinrobe and is mentioned in the 1901 census as living in Mylesestate Kilmaine.
Lizzie was born approx 1885.

Hope this helps.
Thanks
Les

Hi the Lizzie in 1911 Census at Mylesestate Kilmaine is Single.

So if this is your Lizzie she must have married the Moran man between spring 1911 and Summer 1912. And i presume he passed away straight away?

I'm also interested in the Hughes family from ballinrobe. I was told lizzie moran was originally from co. carlow, joined a travelling fair, ended up in ballinrobe, met & married john hughes & had 5 children. The eldest was Patrick b.about 1913 & may explain why she got married so soon after being widowed ( which I was surprised to hear). lizzie d. about 1960/61 in ballinrobe. john d.1928 in ballinrobe aged 48.

the last survivor of the 5 children d.2004, ballinrobe.

John

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply.
My information is very sketchy as my mom (Mary Hughes 1923) spoke about "home" as she used to call it,But  very rarely mentioned her family in detail.

John I would be grateful if you could help me with more details on the Hughes.
All the information I have is what I have tracked down and admitedly some of it might be wrong.

Hope to here from you soon

Just a thought, but the deceased husband may have been a merchant seaman, and lost on the Titanic.

Hi Les,

From what you say I  think I now realise who your Mother is. If I'm correct then I met her at Pat's funeral in about 1972.  My father, Joe, was also one of your Mother's brothers; he died in 2004.  He was also reticent about the past which was frustrating. But he also said very little about the war; on the other hand he had lots to say on horse racing! Joe left ballinrobe in the mid-1930's & only went back once whilst his mother (Lizzie) was alive and that was immediately after he was demobbed in '46. Throughout the war he used to have half his army pay sent to his mother every month, as she must have found life difficult after her husband died in 1928 leaving her with 5 children to bring up.

Scouseboy's comment about Titanic could be helpful as it certainly fits timewise. Definitely worth investigating.  Otherwise, apart from succumbing to some illness, he may have been in the same circus as Lizzie & missed a safetynet one day.

Can we swap mobile numbers as that will save a lot of time?

All the best,

John Hughes
