Tati that really is great you have given me another piece to slot into the puzzle, that must have been the start of the Greenall dynasty as Thomas being 27 would have only been 17 in the 1841 census - forgive me for stating the obviouse but this information really is of importance to me and the new owners of the Rectory, it has been boarded up for many years and is a building of great importance to the area, the new owners are doing a magnificent job of bringing it back to life, I shall give all the information to them when I have compiled it in a decent format and will ensure that your and Jean get full credit for the information you have kindly supplied me with.

Happy to help Algy - no extra credit required!

What bothered me is that Thomas was at Grappenhall Hall instead of the rectory in 1851 ...

Forgive me for being so daft but are parsonage and rectory the same thing? I trawled through the 1841 census and couldn't see a rectory or rector. Nearest I'm getting is:

1841
HO107/93/1 12 20
Parsonage House

John Greenstreet(?), 55, Army, not born in county
Sarah, 45, not born in county
William, 25, Clergyman, not born in county
Anna, 20, not born in county
/
Emma Smith, 20, Upholsterer, not born in county
Mary Ann Davis, 20, Dress Maker, born in county

Tati, Grappenhall is a small village that had (has) two Rectories both adjacent to the Church of St Wilfrids, the Old Rectory that is now a nursing home and the New Rectory that had a rector living there, I am lead to believe it was built about 1830, Grappenhall Hall stood in it's own grounds adjoining the New Rectory Garden, to compicate things more, about a mile across the fields was another grand property called Grappenhall Heyes all three houses had the Greenall family living in them around the mid to late 19th century, no idea who John Greenstreet was and to my knowledge there was never a parson or parsonage in Grappenhall? what area was he from. In answer to your question a Parson is lower down the pecking order than a Rector.

Oh dear! Sorry then, I can't see the Rectory in 1841  :-\

what area was he from.
Looking at later censuses, he might have been William George Greenstreet born Madras, living at Pattingham Staffs from the 1851 census on.
