1861 Census Query - Barrington
« on: Friday 20 November 09 14:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am a little unsure as to the transcription on the 1861 Census and hope sks can help.

Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 814; Folio: 22; Page: 21;

On the Ancestry index it reads that the following people are part of the household:

John Chapman    73
William Chapman    15

Thomas Chapman    45
Thomas Chapman    19
James Chapman    17

Cornelous Mosely    29
Frances Mosely    27
Charles Mosely    5
Rosena Mosely    3
Sarah C Mosely    1
Rebeccah Mosely    3 Mo

I have split them into groups because when I go onto the image they have a different schedule number by the side of each one and the double underlining in several places which usually signifies the end of the "abode".

To confuse it even more for me, Frances is the daughter of John.

Thank you for your time.

Regards

The double slashes occur above John Chapman and beneath Rebeccah Mosely, indicating that it was a single abode. There are single slashes, not double underlining, after William Chapman and after James Chapman, indicating that they were separate families within the same house.

The inhabited houses column is ticked just the once.

For once Ancestry has it correct

Hi David

Many thanks for taking the time to look at this for me.

Now to find out who Thomas Chapman is, it seems to much of a coincidence for him to also be born in Barrington!!!!

Whoever said "everytime a question is answered, another two are asked" was obviously a genealogist[lol].

Again, thank you.

Instructions to enumerators in 1861 said as follows:

"Under the name of the last entered person in each house draw a DOUBLE line, as in the example on the opposite page, to separate the inmates from those for the house next following; and where there is more than one Occupier in the same house, draw a single line to distinguish each Family.  Note- A Lodger, with or without a family, is to be considered an Occupier."

I think the enumerator erred in allocating each family a separate schedule number. The schedule number applied to the house, not to each family within the house.

That was the part that set "the bells ringing".  It didn't look wrong but it didn't look right either.

Cambs FHS has an excellent website at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html which includes a baptism index 1801-37. Both Thos. and Frances' baptisms are shown as 1814 and 1836 respectively, children of John & Ann.

Just put in Chapman and Barrington and you'll get all their other children as well.
