The Hole in the Wall!
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 22:19 GMT (UK) »
Just found my ancester Henry Richardson born Hanbury 1822 ish
Got him on the 1861 census as living at The Hole in the Wall, Wine Vaults, Corn Exchange Derby. Parish of St Peters.
Does anyone know of this? Interested to hear anything at all relating to and if anyone should have a photo or maybe what it is called now??
Henry was described as a Wine Merchant.
Regards
Alyson

Hi Alyson

The Hole in the Wall was on St James Lane in the Corn Market Derby, the pub was there as early as 1819 and was probably demolished in 1866-67 to redevelop the area.
Iam not sure if St James Lane became  St James Street after redevelopment or if the lane was linked to the Street, Derby local studies library should be able to confirm this.
When St James street was widened the St James Hotel was built in 1870 and the building is still there today ( although not as a hotel)

Hope this helps!

Yes and I bet I know all those watering holes you frequent!........ those were the days!
Live down south now but still pop up to see family and visit a few myself.

Hi

Would the wine vaults be also known as "The Vaults", because a Henry Richardson "occupied" The Vaults, which was in Newlands Street in December 1872, when a certain customer came in, and was ejected by Mr. Richardson, just as his wife (Richardson's) was serving him liquor.

The story was published in the Derby Mercury in 1872.

In April, 1873, a Henry Richardson is again at the Vaults in Newlands street and is again assaulted by a customer.

There was also this article:

The Derby Mercury Wednesday, February 14, 1866

    COUNTY COURT Derby, Feb 7.

BANKRUPTCY
Before Mr. Registrar G H WELLER
In re John Bembridge, late of the New Flower Pot, King Street, Derby, publican. This was an adjourned first meeting of creditors herein. The two creditors proved their debts, and Messrs George Harris Lee, of Sadler-gate, Derby, shoemaker, and Henry Richardson, of King-street, Derby, spirit merchant, were chosen creditors assignees, who appointed Mr. William Briggs, of Derby as solicitor.

More about Mr Richardson and the Vaults:

The Derby Mercury ( Wednesday, March 21, 1860
    Crown Court, Tuesday

The article describes some evidence given in defence of the defendant, charged with a serious matter when a puncheon had fallen of a wagon in Sadler-gate, Derby.

Henry Richardson was one of the witnesses:

The article states: Henry Richardson, spirit vault’s keeper, St James-lane, was in the Corn market, and noticed the puncheon was shaking about and he considered it was not safe.

I think a puncheon was a heavy barrel containing some 80 gallons, maybe of rum?

This is fantastic stuff ......these articles have to be referring to my ancester as on census material the Corn Market is given as part of his residence.
Thankyou so much for this .......... just invaluable!.......and you even answered the question resounding in my head when reading you second post ......What on earth is a puncheon?
Can I ask you where you gathered your info?........Is it a website I can visit?
Many, many thanks, this has made my night!
Kindest regards
Alyson

Alyson,

I have sent you a PM, but yes those newspaper articles really bring your FH to life. I had no idea about a puncheon, must be an old word, maybe we don't use such barrels nowadays.
