Seeking a Gordon
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 23:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find the service record of Francis Laing Irvine Paterson, who was in the gordon Highlanders. He was described on his death cert. as a Sergeant Instructor. He committed suicide May 1913 ( age 37) in the drill hall in Buckie North /east scotland. On of the newspaper cutting re his death stated, " Dargia Hero dies by own hand" I had contacted the Museum who gave me a no. 3206 I believe and I had a researcher find the record but this was not the man I was looking for, no fault of the researcher I hasty add. He had apparently spent many years in the Gordons. Any ideas ??

regards,

My answer could be virtually word for word for the recent reply to wrjones -
= pre WW1 they destroyed the records of men who died in service 20 years later.
= you should find him in the Muster Books (WO16) up to c1898
= plus (in your case) a look up of the medal rolls for the Tirah Expedition - http://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armycampaigns/indiancampaigns/samana.htm - and search for Dargai. If no one on this site comes back try a question on the British Medal Forum. Or look at the microfilms in Kew in WO100. The Gordon were also involved in the Boer war.
