London lookup advice sought
« on: Monday 23 November 09 20:15 GMT (UK) »
I've hit a dead end with one of my family whose DOB was 1827 .

I suspect that his name has been mis-transcribed or is part of some missing records.

I'd like some advice on how you would proceed with my search if you were doing it.

I'm looking for John Earley DOB 1827   (. There is nothing on BMD because its prior to 1837.)
I have him in 1891,1881, , 1861, 1851  census.
I have his marriage certificate dated 1846 married to Sarah Ann Bruce.
I have the birth certificate of his first born Edwin Charles Dob 1848

I just cannot find him prior to 1846 ???    I am pretty sure he would have been born in London but its possible he may have been born elsewhere.
His Father's name was John Earley ( recorded on John's birth certificate)

Where would you start looking next in order to be able to order his birth certificate.?

Hi

If he was born pre 1837 I think you'll need to try and find him in parish registers. I've looked on Ancestry in the London Metropolitan Archives but can't see one that fits. I see in 1851 he gives his POB as Bermondsey, pehaps some one has access to the parish records for there.

Also pre 1837 there wont be birth certificate will there? If you are lucky enough to find baptism records that might give parents.

thanks jan . no of course there won't be a cert will there... what was I thinking.? You can tell I'm new to this can't you ;D

I don't seem to be thinking very clearly at the moment. I didn't think about the birthplace as a new lead thanks for the suggestion.

One of my Earley's was transcribed as 'Tooley' ???  on FindMyPast Hope I don't make mistakes like that when i do some transcribing soon.
No wonder some lines come to a full stop is it

I'll check the lists of parish registers and see which districts are missing. thanks
