*COMPLETED* Worcester Birth Registrations
« on: Monday 23 November 09 20:52 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to find some births which (according to censuses) took place in Worcester, but they do not come up in the GRO indexes.  The dates in question are from c1870-1880.  The parents originally came from Ireland.  I am wondering if any records in Worcester have been destroyed/lost thus leaving a gap.  Any light that could be thrown on this would be much appreciated.

Although Civil Reg was introduced in 1837, failure to register a birth only became a "fineable" offence in 1875.  Even then, many births still went unregistered

Could the surname you are looking for be mis-spelt?  The high levels of illiteracy in those days coupled with an Irish accent ......................

The name I am looking for is Annie Hobbins, born Worcester 1872/3.  She had two later siblings neither of which I can find either.  The parents were Peter & Mary Hobbins who both came from Ireland (he from Tipperary and she from Roscommon).  Any further ideas would be appreciated.

I've just had a quick look on Free BMD and found a couple of possibles, neither are shown as Worcester, but in Solihull.

Annie Elizabeth Hobbins born June Quater 1870
Annie Maria Hobbins born June Quater 1873

Thanks all - I already had a note of those two in Solihull but had dismised them as being too far away.  I suppose it's possible that all three children weren't registered at all - hey ho!

One final thing to keep in mind is that not everything made it's way to London. There were omissions, but much fewer than in the 1830s and 1840s.  One of the dangers of using indexes.  They are never perfect.

Try sending to Worcester for a certificate.  You should get your money back if they can't find it.

Finally there is a local name called HOBBIS, check for a transcription error, as Carole suggests.
