Swiss Birth Certificate
« on: Monday 23 November 09 21:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  Could someone tell me how to go about obtaining a Swiss birth certificate?
I have the name of the person and their date of birth, but no place other than Switzerland.
Many thanks in advance.  Pam

Are you looking for a Swiss citizen, or a British person born in Switzerland?

For guidance about searching for Swiss citizens in Switzerland, see here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,183876.0.html

There is no centralised index of BMDs in Switzerland, so unless you know the person's place of origin it will be very difficult.  In addition, privacy laws are strict concerning the last 120 years.

If the person in question is deceased, what is the name and date of birth?  If the name isn't too common, it might be possible to find someone researching the same family in Switzerland.

Hi Rambler, many thanks for your reply. The person who's cert I want may well still be alive. I did a search on Family Search and the name Landtwing only comes up in a place called Zug, Switzerland. So knowing the place they came from what do I do now?

Yes, Zug would be the right place for Landtwing.

If the person is still alive, you won't be able to get a cert, I'm afraid.  If s/he is deceased, you can contact the local register office (explaining your relationship to the person) and ask for information.

If you understand French, there's a short article about the family here: http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/textes/f/F25387.php

It might be worth trying a Swiss genealogy forum - I don't know whether there's a site for Zug genealogy society, but I'll look when I get back from the school run...

Zug is covered by the Central Switzerland FHS (Zentralschweizerische Gesellschaft für Familienforschung).
