GENUKI site should pinpoint it for you  :)

http://website.lineone.net/~pjoiner/genuki/DUR/Muggleswick/index.html

so it would seem to be on the borders of Castleside St John and Muggleswick?

Muggleswick See http://nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces
This 'Place Names Index' can help you to determine which Church of England parish a County Durham place/settlement was situated in, at any given date.

Thanks the place names of Co. Durham in the PDF file works great.  The place for Durham on line doesn't have a Cold Rowley.  I have several baptisms in Esh that name the place of birth as Rowley.  I have several baptisms in the Barrington era in Houghton le Spring that give the mother's native place as Cold Rowley. So off to look at Muggleswick to see if she is there.

Hi Janis

Cold Rowley was in the parish of Castleside.

Gary

Only from 28th July 1863. Castleside with Healeyfield and Rowley was formed into a parish then from the parishes of Muggleswick and Lanchester. Cold Rowley is not listed on the Durham Record site but Rowley is. Cold Rowley does not appear on the 1894-1899, and later maps at http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm only Rowley.

Far be it from me to call into question the works of  Rev Charles E Jackson author of Durham place names. I was merely quoting his written word.

Hello Janis. As a matter of interest, what name would you be looking for at Muggleswick?

Rev Charles E Jackson's book is dated 1916, so he will be listing the places in the parishes they were in then. The 'Place Names Index'  helps you to determine which Church of England parish a County Durham place/settlement was situated in, at any given date. as, during the nineteenth century there were many new parishes created to cope with the increased population.
According to "A Dictionary of County Durham Place-Names" Rowley (Muggleswick) was also known as West Rowley, and Cold Rowley. The additions of West and Cold were for distinction from the Rowley in Lanchester, which was also known as East Rowley and Rowley Gillet.
