Emery
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 19:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My paternal Grandmother Grace McGregor Emery's  father was an Edward Charles Emery (b1854) born in London who married a Harriet E somebody in the as was Cape Colony.
He must have been serving in either Army of Navy at the time. One or two children, William on uk 1881 census aged 18 and Charles Robert on the 1901 uk census aged 15 are down as being born in South Africa. So I'm guessing that Edward and Harriet were married around 1870. Was she a Scot, (Grandmothers middle name)?
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Martin

Hi

If you buy one of the children's birth certificates it will give you Harriet's maiden name.  She gives her place of birth as Cape Colony on the census so perhaps her father was in the forces as well. If we knew her maiden name we could see if there was a birth registered in the overseas index.

I have had a look and this is possibly William J Emery's birth registration on the Army Chaplains Birth Indices, (1796 to 1880). William John Emery, Cape, 1873-74 137.

I cannot find any marriage indexes for the time range you require.

Hello Tressie,
Thanks for your help.

I am not quite sure why it has taken me so long to reply to your contribution. looking at other branches probably.

Have only just now sent off for the copy birth certificate of Grace McGregor Emery (b. Alverstoke 1891).
The William J Emery you found is, I am sure, part of this family - later on the 1901 census he appears to be working as a stoker aboard the Royal Yacht Ophir.
Also I can't fathom why I can't find the Emery family on the 1881 census I have tried various spellings left the location blank etc.
They must have returned from South Africa by then as at that time they have a child Harriet aged 3 born Aldershot and a baby son George Henry born Dover.

Any thoughts?
Regards,
Martin

Hi

I cannot see them in 1881 - I suppose some people did just get missed off.

Will have another look around.

Thanks,

I've been looking for ages they probably kept quiet and didn't answer the door, bound to have been in debt.

You've probably also got photos with no names, dates or locations on as well.
At the time they had no idea that anybody would want to know about their lives.
So frustrating, still, the Time Machine's on order.

I'm looking forward to getting that certificate and will have to control the urge not to get all the branch-line  family members.
