No Roger....Backford is just outside Chester....but....still Cheshire..and there are a few Oakes babtisms in Backford in 1780-1820...they must be related to Ralph as it`s only a tiny village...but I don`t know where these Oakes`s were from before Backford...so frustrating....allan ???

Hi The name OAKES, OKES &c of Cheshire has just come onto my radar last Friday in fact.

A Mary Okes married a William Walton 30 December 1803.

From MIs at the Chester Record Office I believe that Mary died 28 August 1848 and William on 15 February 1840.

I am going to the CRO again today to probe further but if meantime if anyone out there has info on Mary's origins I'd be pleased to hear from them.

You may already be aware of the article on the OAKES surname online re their living at Sproston Hall Cheshire &c.

Regards Ian
