Albert Smith b abt. 1890
« on: Friday 27 November 09 08:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi There

Can anyone give me some help?

Albert Smith b. abt 1890 was my Great Grandfather, and I am really struggling find find further info about him - here's what I have:

He married Hannah Clark on 24th August 1912 at St Mary the Virgin Church in Reading when he was 22.

In October 1917 when my Grandfather Albert was born, he was a Private in the Royal Field Artillery.

The family lived in Reading and Hannah remained there, she remarried in December 1921 so maybe Albert died between his youngest son being born and this date?

I really would like to find out more about this man and his parents etc...  I keep trying different avenues but its such a common name - can anyone make any suggestions?

Would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam :D

My guess is that you'd get more replies and help if you posted this on The Common Room Borad or on the county Board most appropriate to your Albert.

Hi Sam

No doubt a Mod will move this to a more appropriate board, but in the meantime what was Albert's father's name and occupation on the marriage certificate?  This would help locate him in censuses.

Is it possible he died during WW1?

Have you tried searching for his army records?

I am not good at this posting lark - hence being on the wrong board!!!  - Can I move it or do I wait until it gets moved???

I have tried searching for Army records but no success so far - he could have died in the war but I have searched the death records for the Army aswell....

Unfortunately Albert's father was ....Albert Smith!!! and he was deceased so that seems to be dead end aswell.  The witness another male surname Thurogood - so not the mother.....

Re War death, google for CWGC site[Commonwealth War Graves Commission ].  If he died in the war he should be there.
Worth a try- free online.

Thanks Charlotte - I think I did try this but I will give it another go.  The problem is that some of the Albert Smiths dont show relatives so its difficult to decided if its the right one or not.   :-\

Exactly. I've run into that and it's very fristrating.

But if you did find him then you'd know that lead was finished.

Worth a look.

Hi Sam

What was Albert's occupation in 1912 when he married Hannah? Have you tried searching for him by occupation/age on the 1911 census?

Hi Monica

I have tried the 1911 census - the first day it came online iwas straight on at 8.30am!  There are two possibilities there aswell.  Both in the farming line and both living in the St Giles area of Reading.

Thanks for the thought tho....
