Hi I am trying to find out who Mary A Paterson born 1851 was married to -

In the Scotland census 1881
Mary A Paterson Head born 1851 Irving, Ayrshire is living at
Abington Cottage, Corstorphine, Midlothian – house proprietor –
living with Mary Ireland – servant born 1864 and 2 children (Mary W Paterson born 1878 and Alexander W Paterson born 1880)

The 1881 census gives the place of birth of the 2 children as Abington, Lanarkshire

If you search for the births on

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Mary W Paterson year range 1877 to 1877 Lanark all districts

Alexander W Paterson  1880 to 1880 Lanark all districts

there is only 1 result for each.

You will have to buy credits to see more information but it should give you both parents' names, with the mother's maiden name.

Thanks so much for the advice - Mary was a Wilson before she married ... she ended up moving to Fulham with her children and I just wanted to see if I could find out why?  Her husand died in 1880 before Alexander was born - he was Alexander Wilson Paterson a banker !

Thanks for your help in showing me how to find her maiden name!!

There is an entry in the Wills & Testaments section on Scotlands People which is probably Alexander Snr's:

Hi and thanks for finding the will - just wondered if anyone knows if the wills are easy to read - I had enough trouble trying to read Alexander Wilson Paterson's birth information!!
