Ambly,

I knew there was a Methodist connection as my Dad mentioned it. Would that make any difference?

I have just looked on SP for a marriage between 1790 and 1806 for William and Margaret Grey - nothing in those years- unless they married after William was born in 1805, or maybe not at all ? I will have another look.  ::)

The Methodist Weslyan connection could well be the reason, if it goes back far enough...and if it is, you're doubly lucky this couple lived to such an age and have their deaths recorded within Civil Registration AND  have documents pertaining to their deaths which may have a clue linking to your known MILNE family  ;D

Not my area of knowledge - but this is Family Search data on Fetteresso:
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Fetteresso,_Kincardineshire,_Scotland

Births: There are no entries December 1638–January 1641, March 1643–April 1716 and August 1718–1722. There are twelve irregular entries for 1720–1736 on two pages at 1728. After the record for 1819, there occur twelve pages containing irregular entries 1795–1819. Mothers’ names occasionally recorded after 1811, but not regularly until 1814.

Marriages: Marriage records are intermixed with births until March 1643. No entries December 1638–January 1641, March 1643–March 1716, and July 1717–January 1819.

Parish registers for Fetteresso, 1620-1854
Missing years:
Baptisms, Dec. 1638-Jan. 1641, Mar. 1643-Apr. 1716, Aug. 1718-1722;
marriages, Dec. 1638-Jan. 1641, Mar. 1643-Mar. 1643-Mar. 1716, July 1717-Jan. 1819.

So from that, it would seem the period in which Wm & Margaret married is missing anyway. That's if they were Conformist.  And the Conformist period in which children would likely have been born, some records exist but not entirely  'full' - I'm not sure what the term "irregular birth" means in relation to Scottish records  ???

Cheers

Hi to all,

I`d like to say a big thank you to Ambly for pointing me in the right direction  :)  How some of we newcomers to genealogy would manage without ideas and suggestions from the more experienced members - I don`t know.

I really do appreciate the time you spent to help me  :) :) :)

Kindest regards

Hi again  :)

I looked at the will of the William Milne who was residing at Windyedge, thereafter at Cairnhill on SP and I don`t think it`s the right one.
On the will, (which is a really good one, and I wish they were all like this), he mentions all his children - James, George, Janet and Margaret and his Grandson William Allan.

But, I have found on the 1841 census, also living at Cairnhill:-

James Milne, 78, wright, Kincardine
Ann Annand, 40, ag lab, outisde census county

Gracious, there are so many twists and turns here.

Hi Tracey  :D

Sorry, Didn't realise there were updates on this topic till I looked  at my 'new replies' list :'(

So if I understand correctley, you don't think the William who died in 1868,, and his wife Margaret GRAY are the parents of your William ,the Blacksmith who died 1854?  Is that  because the 1868 will  doesn't mention a son named William ?

The 1841 Census for William & Margaret - includes a boy named William ALLAN in the household....Pretty much certain this Census (quoted from my reply earlier) is the same William who died 1868 at least..

Not far from Wm the Blacksmith MILNE in 1841, is the following:

1841 - Cairnhill , Fetteresso
Parish 258, ED 11, Folio 11, Page 1
Wm MILNE 70, Farmer
Margt. MILNE 60
James MILNE 20, Ag Lab
Wm ALLAN 8  Ag Lab
Jane FINDLY 15, Ag LAB
David GRANT 15, ag Lab
All born Kincardineshire

If your William d 1854, is the son of William d 1868,  then son pre-deceased father - in which case the 1868 will might not mention the deceased son.  Unless there's some other glaring point in the Will to say otherwise, I'd still reckon on William and Margaret being the right ones.....supported also by the naming pattern of your William's children?  The Scottish naming pattern was more often than not strongly adhered to and can be an invaluable tool especially in earlier times.

The 78 yr old James MILNE in Cairnhill 1841 - this could be a brother of William who died 1868, perhaps?

Cheers
