There is an Ernest Messeroy aged 1 b St Helier on the 1861 Jersey census - parents George & Charlotte - he also appears on the 1871 with his parents aged 11

He does not appear on any subsequent census in either CI or England

When you get the 1904 marriage cert it may be one to bear in mind

Hi Carole
It certainly is as they really did seem to call themselves any combination of names.  I will definitely update you all when I get the certificate, I am also going for a copy of the court papers and the full article in the Times .... then I don't what I will do if they allprovide a blank...

.... BUT optimism prevails  :D

Hi There

An update!  Have received William Ernests marriage certificate in 1904 and states him as a widower (that doesn't suprise me considering his colourful past).  It does state his father's name as a Thomas William MESSERVY whose job was stated as "of independant means"!

I am being incredibly dense but what does that exactly mean William Ernest's previous wife Jessie was noted on 1901 Census as "living on her own means"  nb she was very musch alive still on the 1901 Census.

Have searched the census in 1871 and 1861 for Thomas William and again I am at a blank..... suggestions or this Messervy family will drive me mad (.... well they already have  :D)

Thanks again - any advise will be appreciated

Hi

It means he had money so didn't need to work.  He's a little rascal isn't he saying he was a widower when he married "wife" number 3?

Who did he marry in 1904 as there are 3 male names on freebmd but only 2 females - Betteridge & Pigot.  It would be interesting to find a 1911 entry for that wife

I wonder if first wife Ada had divorced him by 1904.  If she had - he would be legally married in 1904 as his marriage to Jessie was bigamous

I'll check the CI censuses now we have a fathers name

I'm working backwards here - the 1881 for St Martin has a Thomas William Messervy b 1826 St Martins married to Jane b 1843 - Trinity Jersey.  His occupation was "Surveyor"  No children

His address was "Les Alpes Cottage" and living next door to him was Phillip J Messervy aged 44 - annuitant b St Martin and his aunt Susan Le Vesconte 79 Annuitant b Trinity

Still searching 1871 at the moment

Hi Carole
I found this one on a census in 1871 and keep gettring drawn back to it.  There's a William MESSEROY who was a visitor at Glen Vale, Jersey.  Birth place St Martins 1862.  The surname could easily have been mistranscibed from the site I am using at present.  he seems to fit but as he was visiting on census night I can't cross ref any parents  :-\

He miight be my William - what's your thoughts?  What's the best way for me to access baptism records in Jersey?

Thanks so far

I've been trying to find that entry since you mentioned it in an earlier reply - just tried again and Ancestry have him transcribed as William McDoevey!!!

It could be him but there are no real clues in the image

Sorry - I don't have a clue about CI BMD's
