Missing MCLEOD brothers
« on: Friday 04 December 09 01:00 GMT (UK) »
Dear All,

My MCLEODS arrived aboard the " fever ship"Ticonderoga in 1852.  It was called the fever ship because over 100 Scots perished during the journey and the ship was quarantined at Portsea, Vic on its arrival  :'(

My ancestor Margaret MCLEOD and her 7 siblings survived the journey.

The family consists of :

Margaret b. 1821 Isle of Raasay (off Isle of Skye)
Christina b. 1825
Torquil b. 1827

Their parents were John MCLEOD b. abt 1792 and died 1851 and his wife Catherine died about 1836

John MCLEOD married his 2nd wife Elizabeth (Bess) abt 1836 and their children are:
Alexander b 1837
Ann b. 1838
Niel b. 1840
Catherine b. 1842
Catherine b. 1846

Margaret married James ROBINSON in Melbourne in 1853 and moved to the Barnawartha Vic. area around this time. Her sisters, Christina, Ann and Catherine x2 (yes 2, their Scottish Names were anglicanized to Catherine) also moved to this area. The girls are well researched and very traceable.  ;D

However the boys are not.
I have searched VIC, NSW bdms without luck.   I have a possiblity in Vic of a death for Niel in 1869 which I will probably purchase the certificate.  However I have had no luck tracing Torquil or Alexander.   There are many MCLEODS and without purchasing many certificates,  I have not been able to find any that are obviously the right one.

I am hoping that there are some descendants of these brothers on this list who may be able to help

Many thanks
Roby

Hi,
I do not know how common a name TORQUIL is. I have not encountered it before ;D and for that reason will post a finding of men by that name in Tasmania.   The men are not of the age to be yours, but may be his descendants where the unusual name has been carried down.

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?adv=y
shows something for 1919.

http://www.naa.gov.au
Shows some people of the name, again mostly from Tasmania
(search as a guest)

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=10
may yield some results too.

Hmmm
Not sure if this is your family or not

Victorian indexes show a marriage for
1893 #3176  Torquil MCLEOD, born PURNIM = Margt MCLEOD, born PURNIM,

Also a birth for
1889 #25237  Jno Torquil MCLEOD, father Donald MCLEOD, mother Rachel NEALE, PURNIM,
Perhaps a grandson?

Cannot work out where "PURNIM" is  :o

Given that the girls anglicised their names I wonder if Torquil did also.  It's a very Scots name but not seen much here!

Edit to add further information:

I've looked at the MCLEODs registered in PURN and PURNIM, There appear to be four MCLEOD couples registering children between 1862 and 1876
John MCLEOD and Annie MCGILVERA(R)Y
Lachlan MCLEOD and Ann(e) MCLEOD
Angus MCLEOD and Agnes MUIR
John MCLEOD and Isabella MCLEAN

Births to the couple already mentioned in previous post
1895 #15293 Mary Ann Christina, father Torquil, mother Margt MCLEOD, PURNIM
1896 #22686 Jno Alex MCLEOD, father Torquil, mother Margt MCLEOD, PURNIM

I cannot find a birth for the Torquil married in 1893.  The marriage listing says he was born in PURNIM but I can't see him.

There seem to be a lots of Scots surnames in the PURNIM area, and lots of re-using of forenames - I see Neil and Alexander and John and Margaret used a number of times by different couples.

Thanks warncourt - have seen it on googlemap now
 ;D
Hi Sue

Having googled "MCLEOD PURNIM" I have found a family who have a lot in common with yours, but not the same.  You may care to look at it - for example there is a John Bhain MACLEOD b 1795 Isle of Raasay, m Catherine McSWAIN who died in 1835.

It seems that I may have led you astray with what I have posted.   :-[

I'll leave you to sort it out!!

John Bhain McLeod is my ancestor. I cannot establish any connection between my McLeods and the family being researched, apart from the fact that they both came from Raasay.

Likewise the Torquil McLeods refered to belong to branches of my John Bhain McLeod or other McLeods but not the McLeod being researched.

Dalet, that's the conclusion I came to in the end.  Interesting though, that there are so many paralllels with names and dates.  :-\

Cheers, Judith  :)

Hi all as I have already responded by another site to this query I will post what I have already forwarded to Roby:

Quote
The 1939 Torquil McLeod was aged 83 so born c1856 parents John Mc and
Nellie McLennan.

Only birth in Victoria any where close was in Warrnambool in 1857  TACOL to
John and Margaret McCleod. 2 other sons registered in Warrnambool 1857-1859  to this couple. TACOL could well be a mistranscription!

In Purnim there are 5 births to John MCleod and Isabella McLean 1878-1885

Also in 1870  Margaret Catherine to John and FLora McLeod at SHIR which I
cannot place.

Donald John Torquil MCleod died 1947 aged 57 so born c1890 parents Donald Mc and Rachael Neale. in Purnin 1889 rego 25237

A  Torquil McLeod married Margaret McLeod in Purnim in 1893 rego 3176

There are births to Niel Mcleod in the pioneer index and lots of Alexanders
unfortunately.

Save others time dupilcating the work

regards

Robyn
