John Amos - Westbere
« on: Saturday 05 December 09 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi  :)

Am looking for the birth details of John Amos please.

He appears in the 1861 census RG9/518/187/8 together with his wife and family and is a grocer/baker.  In the 1861 census his date of birth is abt 1829 in Westbere.

In the 1871 census RG10/971/21/6 he is with his wife and family and is date of birth is abt 1825 in Westbere.

I know for sure that his wife, Sophia was born in 1821 in Fordwich as I have her on the IGI from a previous posting.

Can't seem to find him after the 1871 census and on  his son's marriage certificate in 1883 he is dec'd and his occupation is stated as butcher.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Not sure if this is helpful or not.   :-\

The Westbere parish register has no AMOS baptisms around the 1820-1830 period.

The closest possible would be this:

15 Sep 1828 - John - S of Henry & Charlotte AMIS otp. Labr.

and then his sister:

20 May 1832 - Jemima - D of  Henry & Charlotte AMIS otp. Labr.
OSBORNE, WAGHORN, LEDGER, DRURY, SMITHERMAN, TYLER, HUMPHREY, RABBITT, STAPLEY, BATT, WENMAN, SANDS, BUSS, QUINN, GARNETT

Hi Nigelo

That's interesting though, because I found a Henry AMOS in Census b abt 1825 Westbere, some census for him also said Sturry, some said Fordwich - any sign of a bap. him?   I had wondered if he might be a brother of John....or a half brother?

Cheers

In 1851, Sophia is still with her parents (as Sophia L KENZIE), must be not long before her marriage to John which was Jun Qtr 1851.

There is this fellow in 1851:

Westbeer Street, Westbeer, Kent (spelling as on the image), Parish of Westbere, Kent
HO107/ Piece: 1625/ Folio: 193/Page: 3
Servant: John AMIS 22 (?) House Servant, b Westbeer
One of a number of servants in a large househould of one widow Frances FAGGE? or FUGGE?

An enumerator's check mark is made right thru the 2nd digit of his age - don't think it's a 7, but could be a 2 or 3 I think? Surname looks a bit like AMIE  ;) but looks like AMIS to me.

Directly after him is a Head of House, James AMIS 77, and his wife. And after them is Head of House, Henry AMIS 74 and his wife Sarah.

I think you might need to acertain John's father's name from his marriage cert to Sophia.

Hi

Just to let you know that I have applied for the marriage cert of 1851 between John Amos & Sophia McKenzie so will post more when I have received this certificate which should be in the next few days, hopefully.

In the meantime thanks to you both for your messages; will review them with the information I receive from the certificate.

Best wishes

Hello all again

I have the marriage certificate now and the father of John Amos is Henry Amos, Labourer.  John Amos and Sophia Leeds M'Kenzie (looks like an apostrophe not mc!) both of full age, John resident Westbere, Sophia resident Fordwich.  Witnesses were Sophia's sister and brother-in-law.

To recap, I am looking for any details on John Amos's birth and parentage, which could possibly be the Henry AMIS referred to in Ambly's message.  However, this couple seem older than I would have expected for his parents, although I appreciate his may have been the youngest child? Interestingly, Sturry is where John and Sophia are resident in the 1871 census.  John's surname is always AMOS in the censuses I have from 1861 and 1871.

In the 1881 census, Sophia Amos is a widower living with her daughter Thirza in Canterbury, so John Amos died between 1871 and 1881 and I have not found his death either.

Hope I haven't confused you all!  :D

Thanks in anticipation ...

Hi Westwood1,

I have information from Sturry PR that continues the data posted by Nigelo.

Henry Amis married Charlotte Hambrook at Sturry on 07 Apr   1806 - he bachelor of this parish, she spinster of St. Alphage Canterbury - banns. Wits: Joseph Wheatley/William Marsh.

They had the following children at Sturry:

Thomas 19 Jul 1807 but buried 10 Aug of the same year
James 16 Apr 1809
Mary Ann 09 Feb 1812
Stephen 29 May 1814, otp, father a labourer
Charlotte 04 Aug 1816, otp, father a labourer
Harriet  19 Nov 1820, otp, father a labourer
Henry  28 Dec 1824, otp, father a labourer

And from Nigelo's posting it looks as if this same family moved into Westbere to have John and Jemima.

I think this just may be your Henry - here's hoping.

Sincerely,
Susan
