Ada BOYES from Hull UK - San Francisco
« on: Saturday 05 December 09 16:18 GMT (UK) »
Ada (no other first names), daughter of Robert and Jane BOYES, was born in Hull in 1869.
Ada is last seen in the 1881 Census of Hull, aged 11 with her parents.
Ada does not appear in FreeBMD as marrying or dying.

Ada's brothers, James b. 1854 and Robert b. 1860, settled in San Francisco, California.
In 1917 Ada's brother Robert says in a letter from San Francisco to his sister in Hull  "I went to see Ada yesterday and they are all well, she says that she as(sic) send letters and Post cards and as not got any reply from you."
Robert and James BOYES had a niece Ada born 1900 in Hull, but she stayed in Hull and is mentioned in the letter of 1917.
Robert did not marry.  James had a wife Sarah Ann and no daughter Ada.

FamilySearch has a marriage of Ada BOYES to Warren L. MARVIN in 1903 at Sacramento, Calif.

I have been unable to find any later record of Ada BOYES in Ancestry Censuses of England or California, or of Warren and Ada MARVIN.

Where is Ada BOYES ?

Hi

Can you check the birthdates/census dates as they don't add up

Do you mean born 1869 or do you mean the 1891 census

Thanks for spotting that Carole.
I have corrected her d.o.b. to 1869.
Bob.

Ada is bottom left in this photo.

I found a Warren L Marvin in the 1930 USA census but his wife is a Mollie. He was born in California in about 1870 and living in Sacramento.  But looking back he is on the 1910 in Glenn California and I think it says he is Widower.

I cannot find him in 1920.

But as a widower in 1910 he cannot be 'the' Warren L Marvin as Ada was obviously still alive in 1917/18.

Thanks for the MARVIN result Tressle.
I now have to beware of a 'wrong' Ada BOYSE prior to the 1903 wedding.

Hi Bob

Meant to say what a lovely photograph.

I don't know if that is the correct Warren Marvin, he just seemed to be in the right area.  Wish I could locate him in 1920 but I cannot.

When did the boys go over to USA? Just wondered when Ada might have gone.

According to the 1910 Federal Census James BOYES immigrated to USA in 1870. That makes him only 16, but family tradition says that he didn't like the sea and jumped ship at San Francisco.
James and 2 other brothers attended Trinity House School in Hull and he and Robert went to sea.
Father Robert BOYES was born at Gainsborough and worked the inland waterways.
The family can be seen at   http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~davyulceby/

Hi

Very interesting. Thank you for the link.

I found Robert, James and Sarah Ann making a visit home in 1911 but no Ada.

After googling I have found that Warren L Marvin and his wife Mollie's death and burial in the 1930's. He was apparently Warren Leete Marvin.  I also found him (and his wife) in Directories from 1912 to 1920 so even though I can't find them on the 1920 USA census he must be there.

Do you think that it would be possible to get a copy of the marriage certificate with Ada Boyes for 1903.  It is an extracted record isn't it.

Ada has just vanished.  I even went through marriages in England one by one.
