spatchett, spechett, spatcher
« on: Sunday 06 December 09 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to find traces of Thomas Spatchett/Spetchett/Spatcher in Mddx/London between 1871 and 1881. His wife Eliza is at Brick St. in 1871 and not noted as widowed but was re-married by 1881, so presumably he died in the interim.
In 1761 he is coachman in Little Cadogan Place Chelsea/St Georges, Hannover Place. he was b. 1834 Baldock, herts, fthr. Samuel Spatchet/er, gardener.( presumably from Suffolk/Norfolk originally)
I assume he was perhaps at his employer's address for census 1871 but cannot find him. No trace, it seems of his death either.
Ironical that such an unusual name is so difficult to track down!!
Any help much appreciated.( family eventually ended up in Newcastle on Tyne.)

Hi

Thomas Spatchet(t) from the censuses was born circa 1832 in Baldock Hertfordshire. The last child's baptism for parents Thomas and Eliza Mary Ann was at Holy Trinity Chelsea - Herbert Edward in 1868. Eliza Mary (Ann) is 'married' to James Hammond on the 1881 census in Clapham with a child called Ellen L Hammond aged 5 born Chelsea. There is a baptism for an Ellen Louise Hammond daughter of James and Eliza Mary in 1882 at St Paul Clapham (no date of birth specified). The couple were in Elswick Northumberland on the 1891 census.

Births Sep 1875
Hammond  Ellen Louise    Chelsea  1a 271

There doesn't seem to be a marriage between Eliza and James Hammond between 1871 and 1881. If a marriage hasn't been found it might indicate there was an impediment to the marriage taking place in which case the place and date of Thomas' death (if it had occurred) may not have been known by Eliza.

A possible

Deaths Sep 1872
SPECKETT  Thomas  39  Lewes  2b 82

Hi

Thomas Spatchett death registration aged 70 in 1935 would place his date of birth circa 1865 so aged about three at the time of the baptism of Thomas Spatchett and Eliza Mary Ann's child Herbert Edward. The death registration could be of the son Thomas Spatchett though his birth was registered as Thomas William in 1864. He was with the family in Elswick on the 1891 census.
