MURPHY Enniscorthy
« on: Thursday 10 December 09 16:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Trying to find ANY info about the Murphys from Enniscorthy. My GG Grandfather was James Murphy, father to Andrew (b 20.03.1885, Enniscorthy) who married Catherine Donovan (b 18.09.1891, Wexford?).  Children include John, Michael, Kathleen, Margaret (My grandmother b 14.08.1914) and Anna.

I've been told that the Murphy's had a shipping business at some time.  They came to the UK sometime after WW1, (possibly as late as 19830 but not sure).

I have tried to find them on the 1901 and 1911 census but not completely sure what I'm looking for.

Sorry if any/all of this is a bit vague, but any info really apprecaited.

Thanks

Chris

What's the address on Andrews birth cert ?

that might help locate the family on the 1911 census. The 1901 data is not available on the National Archives yet, but is due early next year.

Hi Shane

I'll check it with my aunt and get back on that.

Cheers

In Enniscorthy Roots 1901 there are quite a lot of MURPHY families, and while some of their occ's are given. I can see none with refers to shipping.
If you think these families would be of use in your search, I'll post them here at your request,
Jack.

I wonder did the family move at some stage... Enniscorthy seems like it would be an unusual placee to have shipping company as it is quite a long way from the sea. Maybe somewhere like New Ross or Waterford ?

I'll speak to my aunt over the weekend - you know how old folk forget things, then remember them again.  I must admit I had similar thoughts about Enniscorthy's coastal proximity.

Thanks so far everyone, I'll be back on Sunday/Monday.

There is a train station in Enniscorthy- could the 'shipping business' be connected to it?

Here's a possible for Andrew age 26 with father James:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003563449/

Since you have Andrew's date of birth I presume you have his Birth Cert and from that you know his mother's maiden name.

Check here for his parents' marriage:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable

and order certs here:

http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

Good luck with your search.

Dara.
