welsh miners - how far?
« on: Saturday 12 December 09 07:40 GMT (UK) »
I'm new to researching the Welsh side of my family - I've gone back as far as I can (1841 census) and everyone was a miner (including my husband).  Found it quite easy,- however. where do I go now? Is there a Welsh site or parish register.  I'm from Australia so I'll need a web site.
Woodward - Cheshire, Robinson - Yorkshire, Rees - Wales, Ohara, McGlennon, Kirwan - Ireland & Scotland.

Hi Bullet

It depends ...

 ;D

Where are you ancestors in 1841 and were they born in that county?  Many travelled from other counties or even countries to work in Welsh mines - in fact Welsh mining didn't really take off until the middle of the 19th century, so most were in other occupations prior to that.

The IGI isn't particularly helpful for Wales in my experience but we might be able to recommend other resources.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hello.

I just joined this LIST this morning and I saw your message Re-Miners. That is not what I'm emailing you about. I saw in your list of names WORKMAN.

Well a couple of days ago I put a News Item out on the GLAMORGAN/MONMOUTHSHIRE Rootsweb Mailing List re-WORKMAN, his tragic death and inquest.

What areas are your RYANS, KEARNEY, etc, located in Glamorgan, I have access to the B.M.D.'s of the R.C. Churches- MERTHYR/DOWLAIS and CARDIFF.

Hi John Patrick

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

My WORKMAN family originated in Gloucestershire, though one did venture as far as Monmouthshire (my gt x2 grandma!)

I will send you a Personal Message about my families, so that we don't distract from the original question on this thread.  In order to reply you will have to reply on the boards, which will activate the PM system.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Bullet and welcome!
This is an informative article with lots of links, maps etc. There have been mines in north east Wales as well, which you will no doubt find links to.
                      Happy hunting,

FreeReg ( http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/index.shtml ) is worth a look.
Although it's got very few registers transcribed at present you may be lucky, and it is, like FreeBMD, a work in progress.
