Peter Atkinson and Anne Paxton (Completed)
« on: Saturday 12 December 09 20:48 GMT (UK) »
In one line of my family searches I have gone back as far as Peter Atkinson born about 1796 at Ancroft in Northumberland (Durham Ecclesiastica) and his wife Anne Paxton born about 1801.
They were married on 31st. December 1824 at Norham where we think Ann lived. I would presume this would be in St. Cuthbert's Church.
Peter was a Miller at Horncliffe Mill. We are not sure whether he was "the Miller" and lived inthe Mill house or locally but their two oldest children Margaret (1826) and Robert (1827) were born at Horncliffe Mill itself according to the Census.
By 1841 they had moved down to Ancroft Mill and eventually they had another 6 children , Anne (1828), Jane (1832), Phillis (1834), Herriot (1836), Peter(1830) and Elizabeth (1839)
I've traced the male lines to the present day.
Any information on the parents Peter and Anne - or where I am likely to find more information- preferably online would be helpful.
Whatever happened to the girls I wonder?

Hi
www.freebmd.org.uk may hold a wealth of information for you if you want to trace the marriages of the girls.  When you find suitable candidates you can check them against the two possible spouses on later census records and see if the birth places match.  The 1881 is free to searchonline and all census are available on paying sites.
You should find deaths for the parents too.  Another site worth visiting would be the A2A one to see if there are any mentions of the mills and owners.    Wills may be helpful too.    PRO documents online possibly or local record office lists.
Looking at the original marriage record might give clues if the witnesses were family members.
Regards
Andrea

Thanks for that Andrea. When I get some "free" time I intend to make a start and find out more about the Atkinson family and the Paxtons at that time. Any ideas others have can help.
Hopefully I can get up to North Northumberland next Spring / Summer and look at Parish records etc.

 W,

Church records for Northumberland's Parishes are accessible in the Northumberland Record Office ( @ Woodhorn ), usually on film.

Newcastle City Library has abbreviated transcriptions of Parish records, usually up to circa 1837.

Berwick Record Office also holds church records for north of Northumberland.

For modern day photos of Ancroft (mainly the parish church) go to
www.geograph.org.uk, enter co-ordinates NU0045

Enter NT9249 for Horncliffe (only three photos)

Ancroft Mill(s) show up nicely on old maps within the site
communities.northumberland.gov.uk
Choose " Ancroft" community, select " Plans", see 1769, 1820 and 1828 maps.

Lookinside the "Printed Material" section to see Trade Directory of 1828, including Millers ( perhaps too early for Peter ? )

W,

Within the Northumberland Communities web site, within the "Cornhill-on-Tweed" community, within "Printed Material" section, in Parson&White 1827 directory, under "Butchers" there is " 4 Aitchison, Peter".

The "4" signifies Horncliffe.

See at top of page " 4 Paxton, James, Gentleman"

Thanks Michael. Plenty to be going at there.  First Stop is Woodhorn I think. Going up early in the New year anyway.

  W,

I saw Peter/Ann marriage online. In Norham Parish church ( "Parish" = Church of England=Anglican).

But surprisingly I saw no Atkinson baptisms ( well I did but not children of Peter/Ann).

This lead me to think that Peter/Ann were not Anglicans and baptised their children in another faith ( *Law of England/Wales had it that only legal way to marry was in a " Parish" church- but no religious restrictions on baptisms)

Reference to IGI (online) shows baptisms of Margaret thru to Herriot @ Golden Square Presbyterian church.

* Law changed in 1837 to allow marriages in any religious place of worship and a Register Office.

Michael,
You are a star and obviously experienced at this game whilst I am merely a beginner.
Thanks for all the info. which adds to the story.  The Golden Square Presbyterian Church connection (Berwick) fits the picture as this particular branch of the family were non-conformists.
Rootschatter patrexjax seems to be aware of some connection so I'll PM her.
Thanks again
Rob
