 A snippet from a book " I Never Knew That About England"  ( a Christmas box  :) )

"Up river from the three bridges of Berwick, at Horncliffe is Britain's first suspension bridge, the Union Chain Bridge, built in 1820 by Sir Samuel Brown.
He devised a new kind of link for chain cables which allowed for the development of bigger and heavier suspension bridges, a technique used by Thomas Telford when constructing his Menai Bridge.

Union Bridge has a span of 360 ft and links England with Scotland across the River Tweed.   !

Hi Michael, Hi Pat,
Happy New Year to you both. Not here unfortunately but will keep that for elsewhere.
Michael. I've been on that Bridge. It's quite a construction and I've just got a recently published booklet by a former resident of Horncliffe about the village with a section in it about the Bridge. I've also acquired a short history of Horncliffe Mill.   Will PM you both soon with some more details.
I've managed to get a lot more detail on the birth/baptism dates etc. of Peter Atkinson and Ann Paxton's children and of the children of their two sons Peter (1830)and Robert (1827) mostly from the Durham Parish Records in the IGI. Peter 1830 is my line.
Also found the burial entries for parents Peter Atkinson and Anne Paxton in the Ancroft register. Ancroft Mill was where they moved to just before the 1841 Census.
Anne Paxton was buried 18th. Nov. 1847 aged 47 years. Ancroft (Entry 526)
Peter Atkinson was buried only 4 months later on 26th. March 1848 aged 55 years. (entry 533). The age of 55 years suggests that Peter was actually born in about 1793 not 1796 as originally thought.
Still no luck on where they were born or baptised.
Their two sons Peter then aged 17 years and Robert aged 21 years were left to run the Mill and look after the other younger children.

Hello Naxman, and a warm welcome to Rootschat!   ;D  I am wondering if you have any additional information on your Ann PAXTON, as I feel certain we have a connection through her.  Pat
