 Rob,

In Newcastle City Library this afternoon, I had opportunity to look into Golden Square church records.  They were transcriptions of the original registers
(Film of original registers available in County Rec Office in Woodhorn ( near Ashington))

But these transcriptions held more detail than IGI contained. i.e.
Baptisms
Marg 1st child of Peter    Miller @ Horncliffe Mill
Robert 2nd child, 1st son....."            "          "
Ann 3rd c 2nd d                  Miller @ ANCROFT MILL
Peter 4th c 2nd s                    "             "           "
Jane ISABELLS 5th c 3rd d       "             "           "
Phillis 6th c 4th d                  FARMER @ Ancroft Mill
Herriott  7th c 5th d                   "                 "       "
Elizabeth 8th c 6th d              TENANT @ Ancroft Mill

Michael,

Oh dear - a potential criminal in the family!!?  That could very well be Peter Atkinson (1830) the son of Peter (1796).  By 1851 Peter would be 20 years old and was living with his siblings at Ancroft Mill so the dates fit. The family had moved from Horncliffe Mill to Ancroft Mill before the 1841 census with their eight children.  Indeed by 1851 the two boys Peter and Robert had taken over the running of the mill from their father. There is no mention of the father or mother or sister Margaret in the 1851 census. ( must follow that up)
My line is descended via the two Peters - better watch myself. I wonder what caused the charge of assault?  Anyway he was acquitted so he must have been innocent !!

The marriage entry indicates who was in the Mill before Peter senior took it over.

Thanks again Michael. It all adds to the background of which I have collected quite a bit. Will PM you after the holiday with more on this.

Rob

 Pat,

Although memory is not my strong suite, I do remember you as connected to those north Northumberland Paxtons.  You from a long line of drinkers- well dispensers of drink ?     Thanks for your thanks.

Hello again Michel!  I think I may need a pint of Newcastle Brown Ale!   :o  The IGI extracted records for Harriet/Herriot  Paxton from Golden Square Presbyterian church show she was b. 10 April 1806 and chr. 24 April 1806 - a daughter of Robert Paxton and Margaret Bruce.....You have indicated a wife named "Grizel" ---  Robert died in 1812 having been a redfisherman; after that, I believe that Margaret took over the operation  of the Velvet Hall inn as she is shown in 1841 census still alive as head of household with 3 people that apparently are hers and Robert's children: William, John and Isabella in addition to my ggrandmother, Margaret Ann Scott.  (Margaret Ann's Mother is Harriet Paxton who in 1841 is in Hawick, Roxburghshire with her husband James Best and their daughter, Ann Best...)   NOW, if Grizel was Robert Paxton's wife THAT really puts that branch of my family back to square one.  AND then I shall really need more than a pint!!!   :'(  Can you clarify for me???  Thank you! Most sincerely, Pat

Michael,
Thanks for that. I'll try and digest it when I get a minute. My Missus is complaining about me hogging the computer.
Hi Pat. Feel free to join in.
Have a good holiday Michael . You deserve it after all the searches you've done.
Rob

Pat
Rob,

Today returned to the scene of my crime- 6th floor - Newcastle City Library - Golden Square Church , Berwick, Transcritions on microfiche.

As Pat thought/knew...

Baptism 24 April 1806 Herriot, born 10 April 1806, daughter of Robert Paxton, Inn Keeper, Velvet Hall, Norham Parish and Margaret, his wife.

The entry above was ...
" Bapt 30 Mar 1806, Thomas, born 21 Mar 1806, son of Andrew Middlemass, labourer of Castlegate. and Grizel his wife. "

I originally successfully got the first line of Herriot's entry, but when I twanged back the fiche carriage to get the second line, I must have gone slightly upwards to get the second line of Thomas Middlemass ! ( Thirty five later Thomas is still living in Castlegate, Berwick)
