Hi Carol,

I'm not related so I am unable to post any birth certificates. Dixie will need to post parts of any relevant birth certificates.

Since we knew Ellen was born between 1859 and 1864 and there was no birth record for an Ellen Bligh or Blythe (or phonetic equivalent) in this period (other than the one in Berkhampstead) I had assumed that was not her birth name. The issue of the presence or otherwise of William Bligh or Blythe, a blacksmith, in the marriage certificate was interesting and suggested she might be illegitimate. A search of the 1871 census for William Blighs (or Blythes) who were blacksmiths or living in Bromley, therefore, was an idea in case an Ellen might be found with such a person under a different name. And up came the entry....

Still though need to sort out who was Ellen's real mother and possible father. William, the blacksmith, appears to be her stepfather. Was Ann Davi(e)s her mother or was she perhaps an aunt or elder sister?

In the 1881 Census things get stranger. ::) William has a new wife and the only child with him from 1871 is Rose.

1881 Census
RG11; Piece: 500; Folio: 112; Page: 33
291 Brunswick Road, Poplar, Bromley St Leonard, London
William Blyth Head Mar 34 Blacksmith    Middx, Stepney
Frances Blyth Wife 27                         Middx, St Lukes
Rose Blyth Dau 13                              Middx, Bromley
Ernest (Pabke?) Stepson 6 Scholar       Middx, Bromley
Charles Blyth Son 3                            Essex, West Ham
John Blyth Son 1                                 Middx, Bromley

This is presumably Ann's death:

BLYTH Ann  age 29  1c 468 Poplar Mar 1874 qtr

This is presumably the second marriage:

1c 942 Mile End Jun 1877 qtr
BLYTH William
PAPKE Frances Eleanor

The marriage was on 3 June 1877 at St Thomas, Stepney. William confirms he is a widower (age 31, blacksmith) and the son of John (a labourer). Frances, a widow, (age 23) is the daughter of a Charles Lodington, a steward. Henry and Eugenie Blyth witness the wedding.

I think the following is the critical lead  :) -

1871 Census
RG10; Piece: 570; Folio: 9; Page: 14
George Street, Bromley, London
William Blythe  Head    M      24    Blacksmith              Bromley, Middx
Anne Blythe     Wife     M      27                                Brighton, Sussex
Ellen Davis       Nurse? Child 10                                  Bromley, Middx
Ann E. Davis    Nurse?  Child  8                                   Bromley, Middx
Jane Blythe      Dau                3                                  Bromley, Middx
Rose Blythe     Dau                11 mo                            Bromley, Middx

In other words Ellen Blythe (or Bligh) was born Ellen Davis.

Oooh, thanks for posting this, this fills in some gaps on my tree!

William Blyth married Ann Daveis on 17 March 1867 at St. Barnabas, Homerton, Hackney, London.  I only had 2 children down, viz. Jane and Rose.  He married secondly to my 1st cousin 4 times removed Frances Eleanor Papke (née Lodington) on 3 June 1877 at St. Thomas, Stepney, London.  Witnesses were Henry Blyth and Eugenie Blyth.  They had 8 children, viz. Charles Frederic Willliam Blyth, John Henry Blyth, Frederick Nelson Blyth, Fanny Blyth, Jane Dora Blyth, Ada Jessie Blyth, Harry Blyth and Sydney Blyth.  All of these would be related to myself, of course.

Frances Eleanor Lodington firstly married Ernest Otto E Papke in December Quarter, 1873 in Poplar Registration District.  They had a son Ernest Luie M Papke born September Quarter, 1874 in Bromley.

I think you could be correct, re. Ellen being illegitimate.

William Blyth was born September Quarter, 1847 in Bromley and was the son of John Blyth (born circa 1816, Colchester, Essex) and Jane Haddon (born circa 1820, Basingstoke, Hampshire).

John Blyth married Jane Haddon on 7 August 1836 at St. Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire.  They had 7 children:

1. John Blyth, born circa 1837, Bromley
2. Thomas Blyth, born circa 1840, Bromley

n.b. Frances Eleanor Lodington's father was in fact Candler Lodington, not Charles Lodington.  The Lodingtons are also a very interesting family full of intrigue!

Best regards,

James R. Yeowell.
